Is it ok to hold a newborn baby upright?

Hi mums - some relatives told me that I shouldn’t hold my newborn baby upright or they’ll develop a hunchback because of this. I’ve done some reading and watch different materials, and the main thing I’ve seen are: 1) you shouldn’t let your baby sit until they are ready / 6m + 2) when holding a baby, make sure to support their neck/ head and bottom There’s not much materials about this upright claim, but keep hearing it again and again from relatives is making me worried 😟 . But then I see baby who are in the sling/ baby carrier is essentially upright, no? Also my baby doesn’t like being laid flat for too long. He’s 9 weeks now and loves looking around, sometimes he won’t stop crying unless we hold him upright/vertically. We also pick him up from his underarms and he seems ok, but not sure if this should be avoided too (if so why?) For context, my family is from SE asia so not sure if there’s a cultural difference or difference in norms.

Definitely ok, if they're flat for too long they get flat heads. It's good to have them in a variety of positions throughout the day

I’m sorry what🤣🤣 don’t listen to them, you are doing just fine!😘 it’s not like you’d be holding them upright for a long period of time anyway. Plus like the comment above, various positions is good! The only thing you would be careful with is being in a car seat for no more than 2 hours as that isn’t good for their spine at such a young age xx

1. Supported sitting before 6 months is necessary to learn to sit independently. When baby's back starts to curve, that's a sign that their back muscles are tired and they need to stop practicing sitting. 2. You always want to support baby's head/neck. Depending on how you are holding them, supporting the lower half may not be possible. Just don't hold baby for too long without supporting the whole body, especially as a newborn with no head/neck control

We held our baby upright pretty early on, and her head control was next level. We didn't do it for this but it definitely did no harm. We still supported her fully and her head etc but by about 1 month she already had quite a strong neck.

I hate old lady tales.. these older generations will have you worrying a heck lot more than you should during your pregnancy. I listen to my doctor and my doctor only. Any other opinions or suggestions I don’t pay too much attention to, unless it’s about a baby product or something another mom has actually went through.

How do we burp them if we don’t hold them upright 🤨🤨

Yes, see many parents do it instead of baby always being on their back etc. if baby isn’t comfortable I’m sure they will let you know with a little cry x

Oh my goodness, what a load of crap from your relative! My baby had horrible reflux and we could only hold her upright or she’s vomit and scream. Now nearly 2 and no hunch in sight!

I fed my twins sitting up in an attempt to help them not have trapped wind. They've not seemed to have any negative consequences and are 6 months now. Some mom friends did say they'd never seen anyone feed babies that way before but I'm a ftm so I just did it. 🙈🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️

My LO suffered pretty bad with reflux early on so HATED being laid down, he was constantly upright

If you’re holding their neck it’s fine we got told to feed ours up right to reduce the chances of reflux xx

My LG had, and still has, terrible reflux. She spends most of her time being held up to try and keep something down. Silly comment, just say thank you and move on.
