Haakaa pump - foremilk vs hindmilk

Hello! I’m EBF but needing to build up a small stash for a time when I’m going away for a 24hr period in a couple months and can’t take my LO. She’ll be 4 months by this point. I was recommended to get a Haakaa which I use twice a day in the mornings and evenings whilst feeding on the other side and manage to collect about 1.5-2oz per feed. My question is, will it only be foremilk collecting in here or Will some hindmilk be coming through too? And if so, will that be ok to put in a bottle for my partner to feed while I’m away? I’m just worried that it won’t fill her up if it’s all foremilk and she won’t get the nutrients she needs. My midwife said it would be fine but I wanted to see what any other Haakaa users out here do!! (Not wanting to spend loads on a pump as it’s a one off and will continue to EBF when I’m back) TIA!!

I’m not totally sure on this but I have been told that our milk is really nutritious around 2-4am, could you try pumping around then if you’re worried about a lack of hind milk?

Why not pump a little at the end of a feed?

@Beka ah that’s a good idea, thank you!

@Sophie I’m not sure the Haakaa has enough suction to get much out at the end but I haven’t tried it so definitely will next feed! Thank you

Does she take a bottle? It might be something you need to start introducing now so not a shock in a couple of months time

@Vicky No she doesn’t yet and that’s my plan over the next couple months. I’m going to try and introduce one a day slowly. Also planning on my partner to give it to her as I’ve heard she’s more likely to take it from anyone but me?

I don’t think it’s the case with every baby. I pump as well as breast feed, she will take the bottle from me as well as everyone else

The whole foremilk hind milk thing has been debunked a bit. There's everything she needs in all of the milk but there is a slightly higher about of fat towards the end of the feed but still plenty in all of the milk. I use my hakkaa whenever I need to.

I EBF and I’ve been collecting milk for future needs. I used Haakaa for a while when I had a fissure in one breast and couldn’t feed, so I just put in my haakaa while my baby was nursing in the other breast. I had noticed that it only catches milk letdown when my breast is full with foremilk but when my breast gets softer it barely sucks out any milk. I collected few bags from when I used my haakaa but comparing it now with the milk that is being collected with a pump I can definitely notice there’s a bit if a difference in the amount of fat, not alot of difference though. Just like half the amount of fat.

Could you hand express a little at the end of a feed if you're worried? But I.am sure what you are collecting will be absolutely fine x

@Reem✨ that’s really useful to know thank you

@Naomi ah great, thanks!

So I do the same, collect the let down and after the feed, I hand express some more, therefore should be a mix of both

@Naomi do you know like if your baby’s diapers is turning green because of getting lots of fore milk is that ok? You seem knowledgeable on the subject. I’m trying to get my little girl to feed as long as possible on one side to get more hind milk, but sometimes it’s just such a struggle

@Caz so you pump first and then finish on one side? So your little one gets more hind milk? Sorry I’m such a dummy at this. I’m learning. Breastfeeding is such a fine line and I’m fearful my little girl isn’t getting enough fat. I guess I will know at her next doctors appointment when we weigh her

@Caz ahhh ok gotcha. Maybe I need to be in the mindset that one side is good enough and I don’t need her to feed on both sides for her feeds. Do you know roughly how long you feed your lo on one side ?

@Caz ok thank you!

Thank you @caz I probably will in the next few days
