Wind/Colic Help

My little boy is just under 4 weeks old and is really struggling with wind. He is fully formula fed - we started on aptamil and changed to aptamil comfort for colic last Saturday. He isn’t sick very often and he is having enough wet and dirty nappies. He seems better in this milk but still struggles to get wind up and can take us up to an hour to wind him. He is screaming in pain after feeds and is in discomfort for up to an hour (like in the video I’ve attached.) We are using all the winding techniques, bicycle legs, infacol and we have tried wrapping his tummy in a blanket before winding and nothing seems to help him very much. Can anyone recommend what else we can try or if you think we should contact either health visitor or gp or just keep going? I don’t know if this is normal or needs seeing too as it’s our first baby x

Have you tried infacol I give it my little one at night just to help with his wind but seems to be working

Following. My little boy is the same. Just under 4 weeks and we use Kendamil comfort milk. We also use Infacol and colief but he still struggles 😔 x

We are having the same issue but infacol seems to be helping us. Have you tried rubbing his belly in a clockwise motion? It soothes our little boy a little bit. Or I’ve been told a bath can help although our baby hates bath times with a passion. X

@Josie yes we use infacol with every feed x

@Amy we have tried rubbing. He is ok in the bath, we normally bath him 3 times a week but will try see if it helps with his tummy x

You can try interrupt a feed and burp him.

Have you come across the wonky winding technique? Have a quick Google if not - we find it helps our little one to relieve the wind quickly. If it continues though I would talk to the health visitor first. If you think he may be having a bit of reflux though then try the GP as they can give some stuff to help x

We use dentinox from Tesco on our 3 week old - she struggled to bring up any wind during/after feeds and would be kicking her legs on discomfort and screaming. We’re 2 days in and it’s totally stopped. We get good burps up most feeds now! I’d really recommend.

We had similar issues using Aptamil. I asked my HV about the Aptamil comfort and she said it makes no difference whether you give Aptamil 1 or the comfort. It’s just another product pretending to do something it doesn’t help with! I found sitting my baby upright when feeding helped massively and having breaks every 30 mls to wind helps too. Also I caught my husband shaking the bottle of milk before giving it may have caused problems as you’re meant to whirl it instead. Hope this helps xxx

Hey, my baby is the same, horrible to watch! We found the infacol made it worse so have stopped using xx

Following My little boy is the same

Following too as we are only 13days in and she has started to become very windy but struggle to pass anything, meaning she can't sleep and then gets overtired. It's horrible :( We are only a day or so into trying infacol so hoping that makes a difference but will keep an eye on this post for other suggestions!

In the same boat here! We have tried infacol and no joy. Also using Aptamil so thinking of using an alternative if there’s any recommendations?

@Lilly dentinox!

@Emma definitely recommend dentinox

I am having the exact same issue but baby is exclusively breastfed. Infacol seems to be helping slightly, we also do bicycle legs, tummy massage, keeping her upright for around 20mins after each feed, also looked at reflexology and have started massaging her feet. Every-time we may get flat she starts. It’s awful to watch and I’ve been told multiple times it’s something that will just pass as she gets older.

Wind every 15- 30 ml of milk x

@Amy Draper I'll definitely look into getting some

@Harriet we are using Nuk bottles after being recommended them by our midwife.. I don’t know what teets they are so will have to look into it. Thanks x

@Charné we’ve been doing this every 30ml or so and doesn’t seem to make a difference x

@Nat never heard of it, will Google it now. Thanks!

@Amy Draper brilliant Thankyou, I’ll grab some!

@Emma good to know about the aptamil. Do you still use it or have you swapped brands? I’ve heard health visitors etc don’t like you swapping brands unless they are throwing up a lot so don’t know if it’s worth trying something else?

Having the exact same issue with my 3 week old, so sad to seen them in such discomfort. I’m going to try dentinox

I am going to try baby wearing as well or look into visiting a baby chiropractor.

When he turns 4 weeks try using gripe water! I hear so many good things about it

Also may be worth seeing if there’s any tongue tie even if bottle fed as we’ve been advised this can cause babies to take in more air as they can’t get a full latch around the teat x

Are you pacing the feeds too? X

We are having the same issue - it’s the hardest thing to watch. My son is 3 weeks old and is breastfed but we have to give him a bottle of breast milk when he won’t latch due to the colic. As awful as it sounds, it’s refreshing to know that other mums/babies are going through this!

My baby is 5 weeks old and honestly this video could be him 😔 he’s exactly the same as you’re describing and we’ve tried everything all the other people have suggested. I took him to the GP who said it could be a possible cows milk intolerance. She prescribed some special formula but it made no difference. After a particularly bad day I called them again and said it’s making no difference so they’ve now prescribed infant gaviscon. We’re day two using it now, not sure yet whether it’s making a difference or not 🤷🏻‍♀️ he has good days and bad days anyway so it’s hard to tell yet. Also to note, we’re also using aptimal and he’s fully formula fed. Health visitor just said to keep doing what we’re doing and not to change milk if he’s weeing and pooing. I personally feel the GP was more willing to suggest ways to help than the HV. We’ve also swapped from anti colic tommee tippee to mam.. again, not sure whether it’s made much difference. Im just hoping things get better soon 😔 x

We’re having the same thing. Except my little fella isn’t pooing at the moment for the last 3/4 days he hasn’t. We tried infocal didn’t work for us for wind. He’s on cow and gate and hoping we can change formula Monday after I discuss with Gp. Have you tried lying him down for a minute or two and then quickly lifting him up over your shoulder high? That works best for our baby. Again each is so different. So horrible to see them in pain xx

Following as my little girl is 3 weeks and this video is exactly the same as what she does and I feel so sad for her 😢x

@Roisin this is such a weird one but we find our little girl let’s it all out while she’s drinking a cold bottle of formula - you might want to give it a try. I’m just sitting here feeding her now and she’s done it again so worth a shot!

@Steph I still use Aptamil 1 x

I had this with my girl at that age and turned out to be a dairy intolerance. She was prescribed formula from the doctor which made all the difference! I breast fed initially and had to go dairy free myself so she wasn’t getting the dairy from me. It could also be reflux. We were prescribed Omeprazole from the doctor for that. Such a shame to see them like that. Definitely get onto your GP. X

@Emma swear to god I just gave him a cold bottle for his last feed there and he poo’d 😂😂 I’ve never been so thrilled to see poo haha thanks so much x

@Emma do you give all your bottles cold? Or just an odd one if she’s not going to the toilet?

Having the exact same problem with my 1 month old. Changed the formula from similac to Hipp organic, I also breastfeed him. I only supplement with formula. He’s been extremely fussy and agitated. I tried the I love u massage, bicycle kicks, warm bat and the only way for him to fall asleep is if we wear him. Try also skin to skin- put him naked on top of you belly. It often works. It is just a phase and it’s gonna pass! That’s what I’m telling myself to not go crazy

My baby was the same on aptamil.. it made him so windy and he just ended up being uncomfortable all the time .. I started putting infacol in he’s milk from when he was about a week and half old as he started getting colic and he’s been fine since .. but ofc does have moments .. I also changed he’s milk to hipp organic and it is a big difference x

We switched to cow and gate and it really helped - might be worth a shot? X
