Nutramigen, Omeprazole, reflux, wind…HELP.

Okay please bare with the long post, but I’m just totally at a loss and feeling soo deflated. Any ideas welcome!! My little boy is just over 5 months. He has been on Nutramigen since 2.5 months for suspected CMPA. His symptoms were trapped wind, puffy eyes, explosive poo’s, constant discomfort and crying. Never settling unless he was eventually asleep and silent reflux. All of these symptoms aside from the reflux disappeared within days of starting the milk which was great. We could deal with the reflux as it wasn’t awful, it didn’t seem to bother him too much and his weight was great. That was until around 4/5 weeks ago when he couldn’t be layed down, was waking quickly during naps and vomiting and having lots of coughing like he had something in his throat. We started Omeprazole which after some dose adjustments did seem to make him much more comfortable. Now fast forward to now….his vomiting is worse than ever and he has stupidly painful wind with every feed (I’m talking high pitched screaming, arched back etc until he burps/trumps). He also wakes during naps needing to burp. Could this be a side effect of the Omeprazole?? On a side note…we have started weaning early with mainly veg purées so far. And I feel like he’s CONSTANTLY tired.

In my head I am thinking to either stop the Omeprazole and try a carobel thickener or think about switching his milk…?

I don't know about Omeprazole having this kind of side effects. 🤔 My son reacts weirdly to some vegetables though. It seems that carrots for example are acidic for him??? I don't think there are reasons to switch milk if it was well tolerated. (but I'm no doctor!!) Do you know what vegetables he had and how long you stayed on each? That would be my first elimination trial! Thickeners you can certainly try, it usually doesn't bring much but also doesn't hurt?

My son used to be the exact same. He’s had Gaviscon, omeprazole and then went onto carobel. He’s now on lansoprazole which seems so far to have been the best of the lot! Xxx

Nutramigen still contains dairy. Just broken down to see if baby can handle it that way. Sounds exactly like my little boy, so he was put on Alfamino, which is an amino acid based formula. It contains no dairy at all. So maybe the reflux symptoms isn’t actually reflux (which was exactly the same as my little boy) and he’s still not tolerating the dairy. Maybe ask to be tried on something like Neocate or Alfamino?

Reflux peaks at between 4-6 months so your LO is right in the middle of this. May also be a build up reaction to the dairy in the nutrimagen so an amino acid formula can be used. Omeprazole is a PPI which stops the production of stomach acid but doesn't actually stop the reflux. Sometimes a thickener or gaviscon is needed to work along side it. Given he's so unsettled I would probably try to treat the reflux as a separate issue for now as introducing a new formula can be challenging at the best of times and can take weeks to work.

This is the exact same as my little boy but wanna keep him on nutramigen for 2 weeks before putting him on neocate, he’s omeprazole but is very sicky and uncomfy during and after feeding it’s taking it’s toll as we’ve been back and forth to professionals for 3 weeks ! They only seem to listen when I take my mum as I’m a first time mum and they don’t listen to me ! But it’s so upsetting seeing my baby in pain

Dis anything help in the end? I'm in this same situation now :(

@Astra he was given omeprazole and Sma alfamino formula and he was different baby within 2/3 days ! Like we flicked a switch not looked back ! It took a lot of repeated visits and be fair it was only when he maintained weight that they done anything as got sent to paediatrician at hosp x

Thank you so so much
