How to deal with not breastfeeding at night?
Hi, I breastfeed and pump throughout the day which means I have started to have enough to cover the night which is when my partner will stay up to feed him. So at night I can probably get 6ish hours uninterrupted however my boobs ACHE when I wake up they’re so sore and full it’s so uncomfortable and normally that’s what wakes me up. Is there a way to stop boobs from hurting or lessen the pain without having to wake up at night to empty my boobs out?
Milk is made on a supply and demand basis. If you are extracting milk every 2 hours (a newborn’s schedule) then its very hard to avoid the mastitis at night because your breasts are trying to keep the schedule you set during the day. As the baby ages and feedings are spread out (the baby slowly eases you into this if you are exclusively breastfeeding), this won’t be as much of an issue, so long as you modify your pumping to match the baby’s schedule. So basically. How frequently you extract milk (whether through breastfeeding or pumping) determines how long you can go throughout the night. That being said, I personally experienced engorgement the first few months which made it impossible for me to get through the night. When the engorgement went away, I was able to go for significantly longer stretches without pain or “hardness” from swelling with milk. This process also coincided with my baby not wanting milk as frequently. Hope this helps. Message me if it doesn’t make sense. 😂
