Wearable breast pump advice

I mostly breastfeed my son but have been using a Spectra S2 to pump when needed. In January I’ll be doing a fair few meetings and will have my son babysat at those times so I’m looking for a wearable breast pump that I can use while driving to the city! The three on my list are: Medela Freestyle Hands free Ella by Mumilk Youha Embody If you’ve tried any of the above, what are your thoughts on them?

I would also be interested to know! I’ve used a Spectra S1 but it is quite bulky for out and about.

@Rebecca yes the Spectra’s are so good but they’re not like on the go pumps! And google is no help with advice

I think this was more about the seatbelt issue but would still be good to check if you're allowed to do it.

@Prit oh my goodness that’s crazy!! Didn’t even think of that. All 3 I’m looking at sit in the bra and you can’t really see them so I wonder if that’d be any less of an issue

I have the Ella by mumilk and love it. I haven't used anything else to compare to but I use it all day as i only express. It has a great auto function (20mins) so you don't have to worry about adjusting pump pressure, I get 5 pump sessions out of them, charge by USB c, fits into bra without coming out the top and I don't have any supply issues so I guess suction is good. The only issues I have are you can't bend down when using them as there is no plug and the milk comes out the top (poor bubs has worn it when trying to pick him up) and also while it doesn't come out the top of your bra its still not discreet if wanting to use at work (protrudes out and you can hear the motors going) Hope that helps 😃

@Sonia thank you so much for your thoughts on it! I’ve heard soo many good things about the Ella and it’s comparably less cheaper than the other options so I’m trying to work out what benefits you get for the extra $200. I don’t mind too much if you can see/hear it as I work from home but do off site meetings so most of the time I’ll be alone when pumping.

I got the freestyle Medela… I HATE it…. Got the Mon lait pro wearable pumps and they are sooo much better!

@Natalie thank you! That’s helpful. What do you hate about it? And what do you love about the Mon lait?

@Monique the suction on the Medela is rubbish, the remote vibrates like crazy, is very loud and I hated the suction cable. The first one I had leaked (I took it back and got a replacement) but still hate the replacement as much! I got it on sale at about $480 but would say it’s not even worth half of that! The Mon Lait is quieter, cheaper and has enough suction to take my nipples right off if the setting is high enough! 😂😳 it’s got massage, expression and stimulation modes… highly recommend!!

@Natalie thank you 🫶🏼 will add the Mon Lait to the list.

I used the Youha Ins. I exclusively pumped from birth until my child was 5 months old (fed bub EBM until they were 13 months old) and the Youhas were a god sent. Just be careful when driving in them because I found that when I did that, that the suction to the breast would sometimes get broken because of the movement while driving. Otherwise I loved them and will use them again for next bub.

@Melissa thank you for this!

@Monique also sorry forgot to add, they only hold 180ml

I also have the Ella, love it and it was an absolute game changer for me when I was pumping for every feed (I’m back to full time breast feeding now but it will get another run when I go back to work). I have used the pumps in the women’s and children’s hospital and the Ella’s suction is just as good if not better. I’ve also used the swing pump and the Ella is a lot better than that.

@Kylie thanks for this! The Ella feels like the forerunner so far

If you’re into the Ella I highly recommend the Amazon version. Reading the stats I only found one small difference and the colour. I have a friend who has the Ella and they look identical. Henkion Wearable Breast Pump,Electric handsfree Breast Pump LED Display, pump breastfeeding,3 Modes 12 levels Low Noise&Leakproof, S21 Breast Pump good suction, portable breast pump double,24mm Flange,(S21-2pcs) https://amzn.asia/d/4lkVjKE

I use the new spectra hands free attachments on my s2. Which allows for a little more discreet pumping but still have the same unit.

@Bethany I looked into these but I can’t work out how they work? How is there power?

@Monique you still have to connect it to the s2 via the tubing but they sit in your bra rather then having to hold them. And I mean you could walk around but would have to carry the spectra motor. It’s great for pumping while eating lunch when I’m at work

I have used medela and agree it's pumping capability isn't great and I have a decent oversupply. I look at the Ella but just couldn't justify the cost when I would prefer to have 2 pumps (just to save time). I ended up buying the welcare electric breastpump on sale, so much cheaper and still got a good capacity (150ml I think) and good suction to get the most out of each pump.

@Shannon thank you! Seems like the medela is out

@Bethany this is what I did. Still managed to pump on the go but it was just a bit of a hassle having to pack and lug around a big pump. If I can’t justify pricing for wearable pumps, I’ll probably do this again.

@Kylie I’m going to try my Ella for the first time tomorrow. Do you use the auto mode or do you do massage then suction? Any tips? X

Everyone is different but the auto mode worked for me. I would get up to 240ml per side on this mode. If I used the massage mode I found I got distracted and forgot to change modes. 20mins later I would be wondering why I had no milk 😂
