I'm an infant specialist and nanny 20 years. It's completely normal. Once your daughter learns how to flip over onto her belly. That will be the most comfortable way for her to sleep, and she will want to. It's a developmental milestone, and most infants learn this new skill around 4 months of age. It's okay if she fusses to get to sleep. She is basically just finding her sweet spot. All infants do this a little and could also be in the middle of a sleep cycle and need a few minutes. Flipping her over again and again while she is sleeping or trying to sleep will just cause her to have more sleep anxiety. I actually had another mother who did do this because she was afraid that her daughter wasn't safe to sleep on her belly. ( newborn fears, I get it) ( pregnant currently) ( postpartum doula and night nanny as well) As long as she has a camera on her for viewing, a sleep sack with no swaddle, and in a safe sleep environment, she will be ok. ( no blanket, stuff, animals, and nothing in the crib.
@Lindsay @Tianna Hi mamas thank you for your replies! This is really reassuring. She’s been doing it for just over a week now. I’m terrified because of SIDS mainly but following precautions regarding keeping the cot empty etc. I know some babies love sleeping on their tummies, I’m a a tummy sleeper myself (dad sometimes does so as well) so I know this is probably the case for her but I’m at the stage where I think I should kit her up with a breathing monitor because I keep waking up constantly to check she’s breathing and her nose is exposed. She can flip back onto her back but seems to refuse to when she’s waking up in the middle of the night & gets stressed. @Tianna thank you for pointing out sleep anxiety, I wouldn’t want this for her at all!
My babe would do this for about 3 weeks where he was waking up every time he rolled over and i would try to resettle him only for him to roll over again. It’s gotten better!
@Janessa thank you that’s very reassuring. Did your little one stop rolling altogether?
Honestly once you see her do it once you’ll feel better. And the sleep anxiety for you will go away. I was the same way but now at 6 months she’s got pretty good head control. Sometimes she even sleeps with her head in her mattress but with the right mattress (the infant side not toddler side) she’s been really good. You got this mom! It’s just another milestone she has to work on herself. And once she gets it you’ll forget all about this!
Nope. He just was able to self soothe himself when he rolls over now and sleeps either on his belly or side.
How long has she been doing it for? My girl was the same. I use to say you can roll over you can do it, and just help her. She prefers her tummy sleep now but for awhile I let her just kind of figure it out and she eventually did! Hang in there!
