With my last when I did this I use to let it drop into a shot glass or little pot and then syringe it up after. Found it easier to do it while I was in the bath too
@Helen thank you that is what I was thinking but I didn’t want to get it wrong and it have to be wasted x
I just syringe directly from the nipple
I’ve tried both found doing into a little pot easier just make sure you sterilise whatever you use first x
My method is so attach a haake in the bath and lean forward then use the syringes to transfer x
I just grab straight into syringes, but I've not had much luck harvesting anyway 😬
So when you hand express it’ll go on the end of your nipple I had the syringe in one hand and sucked up each bit whilst expressing with the other :)
Quick question, can someone please tell me from where I can get syringes. I’m 34+2. But my midwife didn’t mention anything about it. Should I ask her for syringes or to buy from somewhere?
I collected directly into the syringe, I didn’t get enough to drip into something!
I got them from antenatal clinic at the hospital.
I found it quite straight forward expressing into the syringe. Saves the hassle of having to sterilise a container etc. and you can just squeeze little by little and get it in the syringe. Alternatively, ask your partner if possible to help you by you expressing and them catching it int the syringe x
@Irsa my midwife didn’t mention until my 36th week appt. Apparently you shouldn’t do it before 36/37 weeks anyway. So I’d say wait for now until then. Alternatively, you can buy them off Amazon pretty cheap!
I’ve found the best way is to express into a spoon and then collect it with the syringe at the end 😊
I was given a little medicine cup and syringes from my midwife. I'm just turning 37weeks so haven't tried it yet

Thank you everyone I used the silicone nuby pump but hand expressed into it then collected with a syringe I managed to get 1ml to fill the syringe does that sound about right for the first time x
@Irsa you can ask the midwife or order ‘sterile syringes off Amazon’ :) xx
@Irsa Amazon they come in a kit. Sterile too.
@Angel I remember after giving birth and managing to hand express roughly 5mls and the midwives were really happy and impressed. They say baby barely takes much milk so early on. So anything is good and I know for most, milk doesn't come through straight away always. I remember hand expressing for a good 20mins and getting like 1ml. The effort for the amount. But they were happy with that
@Irsa I asked my midwife about this and she gave me a couple of syringes x
Probably best/easier to express it into something and then suck it up into syringe.
