How much breast milk to be feeding?!?

I am transitioning to bottle feeding for my LO due to horrible hip pain after delivery and being unable to sit long enough for a breastfeeding session. My LO is 3weeks 5 days old and she’s finishing 3.75oz bottles of BM but won’t sleep longer than 2-3 hours at nights and wakes up hungry for another feed. My question is… how much should I be feeding her?? I know she’s feeding way above feeding guidelines. My mom thinks I should be giving her 4oz or 4.5 but I also don’t want to over feed her. Help please ! Would also like to know if ur BM bottle feeding how big your LO is and how many oz per session LO is drinking. Thank you🥹 ( she was also a big baby and is already out growing 0-3m clothes if that helps🤣) pic of our cutie patootie 💕

If a baby is continuously finishing their bottles it’s time to up the oz’s 😊

For breastfed babies, it is not recommended to give more than 4-4.5oz per bottle feeding, so her doing 3.75oz per feed is great! And at 3, almost 4 weeks, it is normal to feed every 2-3 hours round the clock. You can promote longer night sleep by waking baby for feeds during the day if she goes more than 3.5 hours between feeds. Then during the night, let her wake you and you ✨️should✨️ get longer stretches of sleep for both of you

Most feeding charts are for formula not breast milk remember! Breast milk is very dense so like @Charlotte said you will probably never go over 4-4.5 oz in a bottle.

If she's hungry and takes it, then feed her. It's breastmilk and as long as she's happy and settled after feeds you wouldn't have over done it (Diarrhoea, more than average spit ups or vomiting, unsettled behaviour, extra gassy are signs of overfeeding). My LO was a big baby too and he always ate more then guidelines, but he stayed in the same percentile with growth so all in all was normal.

Breastmilk is not the same as formula so the chart given wouldn’t apply for exclusively feeding breastmilk. You don’t need as much Breast milk as formula. I exclusively breastfed on demand and I can say each time I produces 4 oz on each side and it was always enough if my little one nursed on just one side each time. Too much at a time caused my little one reflux. It’s normal for that age to wake every 3 or so hours. If your baby didn’t wake to nurse that often, your little one would likely lose weight and you’d also likely produce less milk. It’s harder to tell when you bottle feed but if your baby starts to suckle more and it looks like a nibbling that’s for stimulating milk supply and not for hunger at that point. It’s typical for babies to want to keep your supply up so they will actually seem like they are hungry or want more even though they are full, it’s all about making sure they have milk. I exclusively breastfed for a year and I nursed for 2.5 years total and

I learned that nursing at night was essential in keeping milk supply up especially until your body regulates and learns how to produce milk on demand rather than filling up every 2/3/4 hours.

Yeah 4oz per bottle is what my lactation consultant told me as well. They may want more during growth spurts and physical milestones like rolling etc. but that lasts only a few days and then they go back to max 4 oz

My 11 month old still doesn't drink more than 1 boobie full, which for me is about 4oz. And also wakes up throughout the night. Your body will change the calorie count to what your baby needs( which to me is astounding). Breastmilk is processed faster than formula, and it's completely normal that she is waking up even when on the bottle, especially for how young she is. We still wake up to eat 2-3 times a night. If your back, let's you try nursing while laying on your side at night. I only say that because your supply is still getting regulated. If not, make sure you are pumping every time she wakes.💗 I wouldn't up it any more than what she is eating now. I hope this helps some!

@Jolo only if they’re feeling hungry after. if they finish say a 4oz bottle, and are completely content it’s not time to up their ounces… otherwise you’re just over feeding them. my LO always finishes his 6oz bottles, but if i attempt to give him more after, he won’t take it.

You’re doing great I wouldn’t change anything you’re doing. She should still be waking frequently at night

My little one gets one bottle at night and takes 3 ounces. He’s 8 weeks old today. Every baby is different and as long as he isn’t showing signs of over eating like people listed he is drinking what he should!

@Mackenzie I said if they are continuously finishing bottles. I should of been more specific maybe and said if they still seem hungry

I exclusively pump and have done since the first couple of months when I stopped breast feeding due to latching issues. My LG is 6.5 months and has 7oz of breast milk every 3hrs and sleeps right through the night. She would cry at the end of the bottle when we gave her less. I asked the HV if I was over feeding and they said no. As long as baby isn’t being sick it’s not too much. Once crawling they will lean out if a chunky baby anyway

Just feed on demand the more calories she gets during the day the less she’ll need at night

2 to 3 hours is about right time wise for breast milk

It's not how much you feed them its still going to burn the same . Mine is 2.5 weeks and he will take 2 Oz straight but then be wanting another Oz 30 to 40 mins later

@Jazmynn please don’t feed a baby more than 5 oz a feed no matter their age. Breastmilk changes, unlike formula so that means with formula the ounces has to be upped with age because it never changes. Anything above 5 oz is over feeding. I’m currently in school to become a lactation consultant & I’ve also on year 2 of breastfeeding my own child, please reach out with any questions! I love to educate anywhere that I can on this topic!

@Destiny I second this I also run a lactation group where people can ask questions and have them answered by a lactation professional (only me for now) searching for more pros currently

@Reagan I’d love to join and help out! What’s the group?

@Destiny I chose to only breastfeed from my breast. I got the chart from another post here on the app. However, that goes to show some questions should be reserved for professionals! Thank you for your insight.

@Jazmynn I also chose to nurse! It’s such an amazing bonding experience, how long have you been breastfeeding?

@Destiny that’s awesome thank you! How can I tell baby is ready to up the oz? And does that mean frozen milk that I pumped early on (1-2 weeks post partum) will be much less calorie dense so I will need more if I want to feed my baby with it in the future?

Thank you everyone for your insight!!! You are all awesome

@Irene If baby is having plenty of wet diapers (6-8 daily) and is gaining sufficient weight then they are doing fine! A general rule of thumb for babies that only eat breastmilk is 1-1.5 oz per hour. So if baby is feeding every 2-3 hours a bottle should contain between 2-4.5 oz. Like I explained above - A breastfed baby should never need more than 5 oz per feeding no matter the age. Unlike formula, breastmilk changes in calorie content as baby grows to give them what they need. Often times if a breastfed baby is over fed via bottle it stretches their tummies and this can cause them to be unsettled and can be confused for still being hungry. As far as calorie dense, breastmilk does lose nutrients the longer that it’s frozen but not to the point that you’ll have to give baby more during feeds if you’re using that milk. Using frozen breastmilk within 6 months is best but up to a year is okay for this reason! ♥️ You can message me if you ever need too as well!
