Can anyone help? Raising bi-racial child alone.

Hello My partner decided to leave - just before I gave birth, he had been cheating and seeing several other women and had secret children. I still wanted him to be in our child’s life, regardless of what he did to me. He saw her about 5 times after she was born, then just stopped. I have been raising her alone since. I am white and her father is Nigerian. His family live in America and he has not told them about me or our child (despite him telling me they knew about me during our relationship). My daughter is 1.5 years old now. I’m really worried about her missing out on her African heritage. I have got her toys and books representing black people, black history and equality. I have started learning Yoruba and trying to teach her some Yoruba (her fathers language). I have bought her African style clothing and look out for African / Nigerian festivals to take her to - have taken her to one so far. I have learnt a couple of African recipes so far - still need to get better at this. I really want her to experience both her cultures. She should not have to miss out because her father was selfish and decided to leave. She has people of different races in her life, however not to the extent I would like with regards to Nigerian heritage. Is there anyone here in the same position? Does anyone know of any African / children clubs or activities or groups? Is there anything else I can do to try and support her Nigerian heritage? In general it would be lovely to meet other mums in the Watford area! It would also be lovely to be able to learn more about African culture. Sorry for the ramble. I hope your all well! Charlotte x

Hi, I’m not Nigerian but just wanted to say sounds like you’re doing such a good job already! Your daughter will appreciate all this so much when she’s older 🤍 x

@Marian gosh thank you so much. Felt a bit teary reading this. Xx

@Vanessa oh lovely! Northwood isn’t super far from us! How old is your son? X

Hey, I'm not Nigerian either but just wanted to also say that you're honestly doing such an amazing job already and your daughter is so lucky to have someone like you in her life! I live in Watford and have a little boy who is a little older, 22 months and would be happy to meet up if you fancied it! x

My son is 1 year 6 months.

@Gemma hello! Aww that’s so kind to say, honestly really appreciate it! Aww amazing! Yes would be lovely to meet up! Your little one is so cute!! Xx

@Vanessa message me your number if you fancy a little meet up some time xx

My only advice is just because he hasn’t told his family doesn’t mean you can’t. It might be easier for them to get over the shock now before your kid is old enough to look them up via Facebook or a DNA kit on their own… and even if they’re far away they can FaceTime and send cultural items via mail.

@Charlotte I’ve seen I’ve messaged you before. Xx
