Sweep

Hi! What’s everyone’s experience of having a sweep? Got one booked for today at 39+4 and as a first time mum I’m so nervous for this and don’t know what to expect! Thank you 🤍

Hey yeah I’ve had 3 now, unfortunately nothing has happened with them to progress labour- hopefully you have better luck than me 🤞🏻🤞🏻 It’s a bit like having a smear test, they’re Not really painful more the pressure is uncomfortable but they are very quick 20-30seconds and done. Good luck xx

I had a sweep and stretch whilst being induced and I honestly didn’t think it was too bad. Could certainly just breathe through it. They put their fingers in your vagina and locate your cervix and then rotate their fingers. Uncomfortable but not too bad

i personally found it okay, she found my cervix really easily and it’s less than a minute of just pressure up there but you can just breath through it. Afterwards is a bit crampy, sort of like day 1 of period but nothing major unless you’re a lucky one and it works!! good luck xx

@Sarah oh bless you, baby must just be too comfy in there! I’ve heard a few people say that but I got the letter for my smear just as I found out I was pregnant so haven’t actually had one yet! Thank you so much xx

@Terri thank you so much for your advice! Think it’s just the not knowing what to expect but hopefully it will be okay!

@Mia I’m glad you found it okay, hopefully it’s the same for me! It’s just the not knowing haha. Thank you so much xx

They are fine not sore but a little uncomfortable as you would expect. I’ve had two and they haven’t worked but I’m quite early at 39weeks so it’s probably just too early for my baby.

It depends on your cervix really. If it’s back, closed and firm then it will likely be more uncomfortable. Statistically, there is little evidence to suggest a sweep does bring on labour. I had one during my previous labour and I found it horrible. It was very painful and I felt like I had been assaulted. I’d always question if and why you need a sweep, it’s an invasive procedure that is common and therefore just accepted a lot of the time
