GD lunches and snacks

HELP!! I’ve been diagnosed GD today and I’m really worried about what to eat. I’m really picky 😬 I can eat veg and meats and salad do lunches and dinners are ok but will be a long boring 10 weeks. But what about snacks?? I don’t like nuts. I what fruit can I have? Are weetabix ok for breakfast? I can’t eat oats or porridge, weetabix is the best I could do 😣 I start work at 8 and can’t do toast or eggs or anything but of a weekend I can do avocado and eggs and stuff. I’m going to clinic tomorrow so I’m sure they’ll help support me but tonight my mind is everywhere x

Do you like cheese? That’s a great option for pairing with fruit to help you tolerate it. Berries and things like apples are the best fruits to choose. You can also have berries and full fat Greek yoghurt for breakfast. In general, cereals tend to be hard to tolerate as they usually have a lot of sugar in, but you could try weetabix and see how you get on, make sure you have full fat milk with it or add some cream to help tolerate it but it might not work. Do you like nut bars? I can tolerate nature valley protein bars (the slated caramel ones are good) and these are good for on the go and also quite nice for a sweeter treat. Generally you need to eat a lot of fat and protein to tolerate carbs, and always choose wholewheat over white. I can tolerate Warburtons Protein Power bread quite well, but most other breads I struggle with.

If you haven't already check out this website, it has loads of recipes/meal suggestions and lists of GD friendly snacks :) I used it in my last pregnancy and was diet controlled https://www.gestationaldiabetes.co.uk/

Definitely head to Gestational diabetes .Co.uk because they have some fabulous tips on keeping sugars in line, much MUCH better than the NHS advice which is basically eat healthy and measure your carbs 🙄 Simple things to do firstly, Swap to whole meal.or seeded bread, only one slice. Pair with fats and protein. Infact, never eat a naked Carb. So eg if you have a pack of quavers, eat a baby bell, too. Never eat more than one carb at once. Don't use diabetic friendly foods because they're still full of carbs and can spike sugars. Fruit wise berries , paired with full fat Greek yogurt and seeds. Also my breakfast go to z or a protein bagel with cheese or something. Definitely no weetabix. Super full of sugar and carbs, as are pretty much all cereals. Head to their Facebook group, too. I find it so helpful. And the site has recipes for main meals but also dessert...jts been a godsend. Chocolate brownie, millionaire cheesecake, trifles, cakes, muffins etc all safe to eat.

If it's diet controlled it might be a little trial and error, there were some 'ok' foods they suggested for me my first pregnancy which still spiked my sugars and some 'No go's' which were totally fine. I had to test an hour after eating so after one try it was always quite clear, for example I found a Nutrigrain bar absolutely fine for my sugars first thing in the morning x
