Words

Hey guys- is it normal for children to “forget” words? My son is 3, nearly 4 and does have a speech delay (he’s always been able to name things, he just doesn’t converse) but he seems to have forgotten his colours and just babbles an answer and many other things? Has he forgotten or is he playing a power play thing? Or do they just park things in their brains when their learning lots of other things?

Hi Emma! My son also has a speech delay, with therapy has got to the stage where he CAN converse but frequently doesn’t which can be a bit frustrating. He is a bit of a label-er like your boy but it is getting better and occasionally he will say things that he notices/ask me things and it is so wonderful. Is your son receiving speech therapy right now? They usually say that forgetting words (or regressing language) is a red flag that should be raised — that said, when they are working on other things (gross motor skills, fine motor) speech can take a bit of a back seat. My son still babbles and acts like he doesn’t know sometimes when I know he does, but I think it would be worth checking in xx

@Natalie hi! He is on the waiting list for speech but they say he could be still waiting another year yet. He is in the nursery plus scheme at nursery which gives him someone coming in from outside to give him some one on one time and they say that they will do some work on speech through that. I do now think he’s playing me, as I heard him labelling colours to himself the other day and then I asked him and he babbled. I think he used to like showing off but hes never like being a performing monkey 😂 Can’t wait for him to be able to tell me things! I was over the moon when he told me to “go away”! Got to take the wins!
