TSH levels and thyroid medication

Hello 🙋🏼‍♀️, I am getting very confused by my blood results and actions from the consultant and was wondering if anyone can explain it to me who is in the same situation. I used to have stable TSH levels for years (between 1.5 -2.5) on 100mcg LThyroxine. However, the consultant said it’s not enough and increased the dose to 125. My last TSH level was 0.3, which in my understanding way closer to being hyperactive than under active. But he wanted to increase the dose again, as he said the TSH level is too low. This left me VERY confused. Any explanations or similar experience? 😅

Hi, do you know what your T4 level is? Your TSH sounds fine, if a little towards the bottom of the range. However, wouldn't increasing your levothryoxine lower this even further? Is it possible you've misunderstood what your consultant is saying? My TSH level is 0.46 and my consultant says that's perfect. My levothyroxine was similarly increased (125 to 150). When pregnant they like to keep your TSH towards the bottom of the normal range, which is why your meds were increased to start with. I believe 25 increase is pretty standard.

They haven’t even checked my T4… they are only checking my TSH levels monthly. No, he definitely wanted to increase, but then decided to leave it for now. I was just surprised he even considered to increase again (and I mentioned my confusion) Thank you for your answer though 😊.

I was on 100 before pregnancy and am now taking 125. I have no idea what my levels are so not much help sorry but know my dosage has definitely increased by 25mg

@Clara doctors are only human. Maybe he got confused himself and then backtracked without saying that he was wrong? 😅 at the beginning my consultant was trying to say (on more than 1 occasion!) that I should be on 125, even though I was already on 125. I ignored him and upped my dose to 150 until I could get through to him and then he just laughed and agreed. No acknowledgement that he'd been talking nonsense 🤷🏼‍♀️

I feel that thyroid care whilst pregnant is extremely hit and miss, which is such a shame when it has such an impact on you and baby! (This is coming from someone who had a TSH of 8.2 at the beginning of September and my consultant said ‘it was a little high’ 🙄)

My TSH has been around 0.3 maintained by 100mcg of levothyroxine. My endocrinologist has been happy with this level. I was hyper when it reached < 0.1

@Katie oh I know 😅! I even said this to my partner. And you can tell most of the doctors are not specialist on this field, but it’s a little bit frustrating as it can have such an impact on your well being too 😄

@Lucy it definitely seems that way, which is a shame. What annoys me a little bit is, that doctors are reluctant to admit mistakes sometimes🥲. 8.2 ? Oh dear 😫 hope it’s all managed now

@Clara well that consultant is a specialist! I was under a different endocrinologist and got moved over to him as he specialises in antenatal endocrinology 🤦🏼‍♀️

@Katie that’s shocking!

@Clara 100%, they’re very reluctant to take accountability! I’m luckily back down to 2.8 now after having bloods on Tuesday, just frustrating to have even got a TSH level that high 🙃
