IVF fears

I’m trying to not overthink things but it’s quite hard. We will be starting our first round of IVF soon and all I can think is what I’m scared of - I’m scared I’ll produce no eggs - I’m scared I’ll produce too many eggs and not be allowed a fresh transfer - I’m scared no eggs will fertilise - I’m scared no eggs will get to day 5 - I’m scared the sperm will suddenly not be good enough despite the test a year ago being fine - I’m overall scared we’ll do it all and it won’t work and I’ll have another negative test after it all I’m just scared and it’s ridiculous, I think my main worry is I’ve read that pretty much nobody gets pregnant from the first cycle and unfortunately we can only afford one cycle. I know I need to stop worrying as they definitely won’t help but it’s so daunting

We got pregnant from the first cycle and honestly like you said worrying won't help. The nurses/doctors are so supportive and they will provide you with the best care. They will obviously try their best to ensure that you get pregnant. Just take each day as it comes and try not to think too far ahead x

I have been doing ivf for so many years but everyone is different they will see how things go and will monitor you along the way and if you feel like something is wrong they are there and if it is at night then you go to er

Let the fears in, they are normal and understandable. A lot of this process is down to nature/chance/luck and part of dealing with my worries has been letting go of control and letting nature take over (sometimes easier said than done but can feel quite liberating to not feel totally responsible for how this turns out). Trust that, while we are at the mercy of how nature unfolds, amazing things do happen and they can happen to you 🤍

Your fears are valid! It’s a very stressful process but try to remain positive as stress it’s the worse thing for you. IVF worked for me first time we had a 5 day fresh transfer and then had 3 embryos to freeze. It absolutely can work first time round x

Thank you so much for your replies, I needed to get that off my chest and it’s been lovely hearing some success stories. I’m definitely going to take on board that it’s out of my control and try to take time to make peace with it being up to nature 💜 x

Hello lovely, these are all normal fears that many women (and the men!) come into clinic with. It is NOT ridiculous to be scared. I’m a fertility assistant so more than happy to chat with you if you wanted to private message me. Be proud of yourself for taking this next step. X

I will also be starting IVF soon and you have now unlocked new fears that I hadn’t even thought of 😆. I know it is hard but try to go I to this with a positive mindset- for me this is thinking that even if it fails at one of the stages at least then I will be able to identify where the problem(s) lie. I have undiagnosed infertility and have been through three failed rounds of IUI. I also understand that with each round/transfer they may tweak the protocol depending on how you respond/your needs. So that is my positive takeaway. So lovely to hear the success stories

@Kate I’m so sorry that’s the last thing I wanted to do 😞 x

Don’t worry I am sure I would have come up with them myself sooner or later 😆. Wishing you the very best- I really hope it works for you the first time- fingers crossed! x

I got pregnant first cycle, first transfer! I know it's really scary, and there are so many unknowns, but just try and take it one step at a time. I kind of encountered all of your fears, didn't produce very many eggs at all, went ahead with trigger and collection and then produced too many eggs, got OHSS, from 16 eggs only 3 embryos made it to day 5, fresh transfer cancelled due to OHSS, delayed FET because of Christmas, embryo didn't defrost as expected but they put it back in anyway. All of that, and now I'm having my baby boy tomorrow by c section 🩵 fingers crossed for you 🤞🏻

I feel your pain - we can reasonably afford one cycle but a 2nd would be a hardship so a lot is rising on it going well which is scary - but I try to remember we’ll at least have more data even if we don’t succeed with a successful pregnancy - better than just trying every month with no idea why it’s not working.. wishing you the best outcome!

@Charley thank you for being so honest, it really does show that anything can happen and you have no control. @Charlotte it’s hard isn’t it when you’ve got to budget, I wish I qualified for a few rounds free but we don’t and I wish I had an endless pot to keep going until it worked, fingers crossed and strong vibes that we’ll only need the one 🤞🏻

I used all my super to do my ivf

I got pregnant first cycle! Good luck 🤞🏼 xxxxx

I'm with you on all the fears. We've just started our first round, currently on day 4 of injections. Trying to stay positive and also making sure we have fun things booked in 😊

Trust me I can add 100 more fears to the list 😅🥹 I actually ended up having a) abandoned first cycle due to over response b) ruptured ovary due to over response after fresh transfer & emergency surgery c) 3 miscarriage (did 3 ivf cycles & 7 transfers in total) d) ruptured intestine after c section so almost died… and another major surgery after birth!! Not writing to scare you but no way I could have imagined what happened to me in this journey despite having 100+ other fears. Even so it’s just so worth it to have my baby boy! I had so many negative thoughts but I kept telling myself I was only getting closer to the end goal!! So I must be the most negative and positive person in the ivf journey 😂😅

These are all completely normal fears!! I’d recommend finding some activities that you love that can take your mind off of things. Worrying will not do you any good! Definitely chat with your provider about some of these worries because they can alleviate many of your fears. If you are doing IVF, you already know how many follicles you generally have, so that can be an indicator for how many eggs. I was someone who produced too many eggs and wasn’t allowed a fresh transfer because of ohss risk. Did you know that frozen transfers actually have slightly higher success rates? I was successful my first frozen transfer :) know that so much is just down to luck and worry about the things you can control - what you eat, what you do to keep peace and joy during this time, taking your meds, etc.
