How soon after C-section were people walking about?

I had a C-section 3 days ago & while the wound is sensitive so I’m slower moving around, I have been up and about around the house, mainly going from upstairs to downstairs to relax or grab a drink nothing strenuous in my opinion, however my midwife came yesterday and was shocked that I was going up and downstairs and said she’d expect me to be in bed for at least a week and that it can cause issues later on. What are people’s thoughts on this? I’m now starting to worry but also don’t feel like I can stay in bed for a week.

3 days too and was actuality encouraged to walk as it helps with constipation and healing so not sure why your midwife said that but maybe rest take it easy but no need to stay in bed.

Day after I was walking round the ward and discharged myself. Got home and was taking it slower but was doing everything again within a week or 2

I had mine Friday and was home yesterday lunchtime. I've been walking about fine today and feel really good, but I understand each day is different and not to do too much xx

I could get up and down the stairs as soon as I came home (3 days postpartum) and I was walking to appointments at 5 days pp and 10 days pp but I didn’t get my normal pace or walk back until 6 weeks. I actually went out for a meal for my grandmothers birthday 7 days after my son was born and was walking around

I was moving about 9 hours post surgery when they helped me out of bed. I didn't walk past my bed until the next evening because my catheter was left in like 35 hours

I was walking the very next day, after the catheter came out

I was walking around the day after my c section once the numbness on my legs wore off .. definitely hurt so bad but you got to honestly it’s gonna help you so much .. it’s probably because your going up and down stairs .. idk I wouldn’t recommend that especially if it’s a lot of stairs .. walking around doing movement yes but the stairs ?? That seems a bit much .

Your midwife is talking rubbish 🤦🏻‍♀️ Moving is the best thing to do for recovery, ignore her!

I was at the pub for lunch on day 4 and Costco on day 5. My midwives told me not to be in bed at all, being mobile slow and steady is what helps with recovery after any surgery xx

I was up the next day, doing everything as normal to be honest. I was sore and bending was hard, but post natal ward were rubbish with helping me & my partner had to leave for a bit so it was just me. I was released that day & continued doing normal activities when at home too.

My csection was on Friday and I was discharged on Saturday evening. At that point I made it up the stairs at home but have spent today mostly sat propped up in bed (also how I’m sleeping) getting up every few hours to use the bathroom. Am trying to move my legs and do things like ankle rolls while in bed to help keep come movements and lower the risk of blood clots. Definitely still sore though, just trying to keep on top of painkillers

@Carmen there’s absolutely no need to avoid stairs. You don’t use your stomach muscles to climb stairs, you use your legs.

@N 💞 … girl if it’s a lot of stairs like a full flight and she’s going up and down then multiple times a day yea I’m sure that’s not good , you can’t act like nothing isn’t wrong with you after having a C-section 7 layers were cut thru . Like I said if it’s a couple steps then yea okay but normally in a house it’s what ? At least 12 or more and that’s a lot on your body . I could barely walk up 5 steps after my C-section without being in excruciating pain . So I can’t imagine walking up n down stairs MULTIPLE times a day , walking around yes walking up n down a few stairs yes but a full flight is crazy asf . Idc what you say my sister had a c section 2 weeks before mine and hers popped back opened just because she was bending over multiple times a day . Me I didnt do nothing like that and my c section healed fast asf my doctor was spruised I healed as fast as I did but that’s bc I didn’t PUSH LIMITS ! Get up n do stuff yes but don’t push yourself that can lead to complications. thanks💘

@N 💞 don’t reply back bc I was never speaking to you , this isn’t your post , you commented just like everyone else just tryna give advice. But don’t advise females who just had MAJOR surgery to act like nothing is wrong with them and continue moving like nothing is wrong . That’s how people do end up having complications with their c section bc they over do it .

@Carmen lol You’re funny. If you’ve never experienced the stairs after a c section you can’t really comment on it can you? So I was simply letting you know that’s it’s not an issue.. I’ve had 2 sections and climbed the stairs afterwards (multiple times a day) after both of them and recovered perfectly fine both times.

@N 💞 girl get a life ! You never had to replied to my comment like go on somewhere . You look too grown for this literally 🥴😂

How about we accept that every one of our bodies is different? Same as every Caesarian is different? I live in a 3 storey house, I did stairs every day from the day I was discharged and it doesn’t hurt. Just went slow. I love heard mums say going sideways helps. The OP was asking if her activity level is normal or will cause issues. OP, no it won’t 😊 you seem sensible and to be taking everything at your own pace, that’s all that matters. Most mums are active post baby and have no issues at all as a result xx

I was walking the same day with my first, had the surgery at 10am and was walking to the toilet by 6pm. I took a bit longer with my 2nd but was still within 24 hours

I was up and walking that night in the hospital. When I got home I was doing whatever I needed to do (up and down stairs). I would just take it easy and rest when you need. Listen to your body. You know you best.

Walking is fine but it's not advised to go up and down the stairs so soon. She's right you should minimise that as that causes much more strain on that area (you do use those muscles). I've had 3 c sections and even if you feel capable it's best to listen to the advice if you don't want to extend your recovery time.

I was up walking around 8hrs after my c section like they get you to do... then once I was home 24hrs after I was walking up and down the stairs morning and night rest spent on the sofa walking to the downstairs toilet back by day 3 I was washing bottles 🍼 1week and 3days pp I been on walks and round the town 🥰 all I can say is listen to your body

I had mine on a Sunday morning was up walking about 7hrs later then was home the next day x

I was walking as soon as the catheter came out.

All the nurses and my mom told me I needed to be up and walking as so as I can because it helps with healing. When my mom had my brother via emergency C-section the night nurses told her to stay in bed and by the time the morning nurses came in they were telling she needed to be up and walking. When she finally got up to walk it hurt her so much. But for me I was up and walking about 7-8 hours after mine. It hurt a little mostly from being numbed up pretty good. I scared one of my nurses because I was standing holding my son.

You need to move to avoid blood clots. I was made to get up and walk around whilst still in hospital. I was walking 12 hours after my op. 7 days post op I walked to my nearest lamp post outside my house and back. Then every other day I’d try and reach the next lamppost. At the end of the day only you know your body. I listened to mine and if it was too sore after I’d walked I knew that was too much and to take it easier the next day x

That’s crazy, I was walking 10 hours later and the hospital said it’s important to walk to avoid blot clots and speed up recovery, that’s an ancient way of thinking!

As soon as the nurse had me up I was up. They encouraged me to get up as much as I could. Stairs were fine as long as I didn’t hold baby for the first few day. Honestly I was out walking with a stroller and my dog the day after I got home.. so 4 days post C-section. Do what works for you. Just take it easy.

I was up independently the next afternoon after surgery. Baby was born at 9:38, i made it to the recovery around 11:30 ish (i think 😅) and i was up independently in the afternoon. Once we got home, i resumed normal activities..just slower than normal. Lol.

I was up the same night as soon as spinal wire off and then the next day I was barely in bed at hospital once catheter was out. I found getting in and out of bed the hardest so it was easier to be up and about

I was up and walking 5 hours later had my catheter removed and walked the hallways all night as the trapped wind was more painful than my section 😵‍💫

I was up and about once the spinal block wore off. But as soon as going home after a 2 day hospital stay I started doing laundry immediately. looking back I wish I had just completely relaxed in bed for a few more days. I didn’t have any complications but I definitely think I could’ve let my body heal longer.

I came home 24 hrs after my c section and was pottering around the following day. They encourage movement just not over doing it.

Just listen to your own body and do what feels comfortable for you. It took me a week to properly feel better after my c-section. My stomach muscles and wound were really sore for days afterwards, even coughing or laughing hurt and I was definitely walking more slowly, carefully and didn’t walk far distances otherwise I felt like I was going to pass out. I had general anaesthetic as I had a cat 1 emergency c-section, so not sure if that made a difference. Just keep taking pain relief and take your time, if needed x

It’s good to start walking asap after a c section. Helps prevent blood clots. I was out shopping 4-5 days pp. Slow walking is best until your fully healed. As long as you take breaks and your not constantly up on your feet you should be fine

I wouldn’t worry about it at all, I had a section about 4 months ago now, I got told to rest but I can’t just sit all day, I was out walking around at 2 days post section, been out to family events etc, just take it slow where ever you go, it does get easier to walk about etc when the pain eases off.

After my first I was up and doing the food shop on day three pushing the cart and grabbing all the food to chuck in it after my second I was up and walking 6 hours later and took myself outside for a 10 mins walk in the fresh air and again on day 3 went and did the food shop and by day 5 I was lifting my toddler bad no issues at all doing that or going up and down the stairs

@N 💞 my midwife encouraged the stairs she told me it wouldnt impact the c section at all as like you said you use your legs not your stomach and groin to climb them and she said it would keep me going and reduce chances of clotting as it was immediate minor exercise

I had my c section at 10am I was up out of the bed by 6pm and in the shower by 7pm the same day. The next morning I was walking up and down the ward most of the day till I went home. It's sore don't get me wrong but I was determined to go home the next day. Walking helps with bowel movement and they tend to not let you go until u have been x

my csection was at 9:30 am, was not as routine as expected so i didnt get to recovery until after 12:30 pm (i had my tubes removed at the same time and because of babygirls position in my body, my tubes were buried behind my very swollen uterus, it was a whole thing😂) and then i was in recovery for an hour before i got to go meet my baby in PICU (cardiac baby, complex heart defects) and then i was whisked off to my in patient room. I was semi walking/hobbling by 7 pm, but it was really hard.

In the UK most hospitals operate an "enhanced recovery pathway" which usually involves getting up and about as soon as you are able. The reasoning being (aslong as you don't over do it) it actually aids your recovery. Everything slowly and carefully should be fine. Stay on top of pain relief by alternating paracetamol and ibuprofen religiously for a couple of weeks. I found staying still, sitting, laying in bed for too long just made me ache more and made it more difficult to move when I needed to. My boy was born 13.27, I was walking that evening. Up in the morning getting ready and packing to go home. Home around 4pm. Up and down stairs straight away, kneeling to change him on floor etc.

My son was born at 9:25 am via c-section I was up and walking to the toilet just before 1pm. Getting up and moving around is really important. Do what’s comfortable don’t push yourself too soon it’ll set back your recovery
