Healthy hens

So I find that eggs from pasture raised hens have richer darker yolks and taste better…I found a dozen of pasture raised non gmo $4.49 which is not bad…any mamas think the color of the yolk is indicative of a healthier hen?

Color of the yolk indicates how they were fed. I buy pasture raised from Trader Joe’s and they usually have deep yolks too, but it’s only because they’re fed less corn or wheat

A little, but not really. It has to do with their diet/season/age.

So I have backyard chickens... the yolk does indicate how well the hens are fed and how fresh the yolks are. I notice if I am able to let them out to forage the eggs look bright and almost orange, but if they are contained the yolk becomes pale and yellow. (We have a stray dog issue in our area, so I don't always let them loose for their own protection) Those look healthy chickens laid them❤ getting plenty of fresh vegetation and bugs

@Monét oh wow I thought so…I don’t want to spend extra money for nothing lol Trader Joe’s is so far from me though in Atlanta…I was addicted to their street corn Mexican chips and guac 🥑

@Sierra I want some chickens too one day! 😭 lol sorry your hens don’t get out as much but how is it raising chickens? Do you eat chicken also or just the eggs?

@Yasmina I eat the roosters that have tried hurting the kids. It's been a while though. The flock I have is pretty chill... chickens are over all easy to care for, other than predators. Racoons, opossums, hawks, owls, foxes and stray dogs are a problem. Something always wants to eat them. It's an addiction raising chickens though. No matter how many I've lost, I always end up getting more even though I feel like quitting sometimes.

Yea I have seen that roosters are very aggressive and Awww I have seen videos of affectionate chickens…I was always afraid I might get so attached that I can’t eat chicken anymore lol

@Yasmina I mean pasture raised are better for other reasons. The hens are happier, which we know affects the meat/product from the animal.

@Monét ohh ok I see so the proper diet of grass and bugs don’t produce more nutrients in the yolk?

@Yasmina not from what I’ve read honestly!

Wow the eggs I buy from grocery stores are always pale wth 😭

@Cindy I know mama, that’s what I noticed then watching cooking videos I started seeing eggs like these and often it was in another country and I tried happy eggs first and those are dark as well but I kept trying to save money which I had too until I started buying my dairy and eggs from the farmers market it’s way cheaper…these eggs were $4.49 at the market but at Sprouts the grocery store same. Eggs are like $7+

@Monét sorry mama but I gotta disagree with that because when they feed the animals their natural diet they are healthier and healthier produces more nutrients…how much more idk 🤷🏽‍♀️ lol but definitely can taste the difference…It’s just insane what we gotta pay for healthier foods
