Weaning -

Has anyone thought about weaning yet? LO is 6 months December 6th, but 6 months technically on the 27th of this month. I’ve had two diff HVs tell me to wait until December but also that from November is fine so just wanted to see where you guys are at! She has 2 teeth, can sit up in high chair perfectly fine and also can sit unaided for brief periods without chair/etc. grabs things to put to her mouth properly, and doesn’t have much of a tongue reflex anymore. She also keeps grabbing our food out of our hands, constantly watches us eat with excitement and just has a general interest in food when it’s about. I’m nervous on the idea of weaning before 6 months but frankly keep getting told wildly different things from health visitors and doctors!

It's not really called weaning right now, it's more like introducing solids. They still need breast milk/formula as their main source of nutrients until they are 1. Many babies will breast feed for much longer as it is really good for them mentally and physically, it is also good for momma! My doctor gave us the thumbs up at 6 months so I'll be waiting till then (she's 5 months now). From everything you mentioned above she seems ready, you can start small for now if you don't feel comfortable completely or just wait the week or 2. Up to you, it is close enough to the 6 month mark though so I personally wouldn't worry too much.

The feeding team I’m under told me that once little one shows all those signs you said you can introduce solids if you’re ready to!

We started ours just before she was 5months old and is loving it 🥰 x

I’m in the same boat my lo is 6 month on the 14th December. She not a hungry baby (if anything she’s the opposite she never finishes her bottle ) but she is sitting up , bringing things to her mouth etc . My health advisor is visiting in 2 weeks so I’m just gonna wait to se what she saids .it’s gonna so no harm waiting even though I know she’s ready

The guidelines say from 4 to 6 months. But my health visitor said you can wean them earlier, but as close to 6 months as possible. Tbh though my little one is 5 month on 24th of november and he is so ready to be weaned as he is showing interest in food and us eating. So we are going to introduce small amounts of food. It is all to do with your baby and how they are reacting to food and what you are eating and what their interest is. My health visitor said when they show interest in you eating and keeps looking at others food then they are ready to be started on eating.

For me I am waiting until 6 months (26 weeks) as per nhs and WHO recommendations. As long as your baby is thriving off milk and growing as they should and there are no concerns or recommendations from any medical professional to wean earlier than this, I don’t see the need to rush into it before 6 months. Even if they are showing signs of readiness outside their guts are still developing inside and you can’t see that. I know there is wildly different advice given even from health visitors which is so confusing but I think it’s always best to go of official guidelines for things like this. Trying to grab food, chewing along etc is a mimicking behaviour and a great sign of developing well but it doesn’t mean they are actually hungry. They don’t know what food is yet if that makes sense - same way they try to eat literally anything they have in their reach it’s a way to explore the world around them not a hunger sign specifically.

All of that being said you know your baby best and lots of people do wean earlier and it works for them 🤍! That’s just my thoughts for my own children but no judgement to anyone else who chooses to parent differently to me Xx

My boy is 6 months on 7th December but the last week I’ve started! We’ve tried baby porridge which he absolutely loves!! And we’ve been trying different fruit / veg purées! I will eventually go to BLW as well as puree, but he’s absolutely loving the purées as a starting point!! My LB was showing all the signs of being ready and he took to it amazingly! I was dead set on not starting till 6 months but he’d been showing signs for ages so I thought I’d try it, it’s not too much earlier than exactly 6 months either. Go with whatever you feel! My LB is loving it so far x
