I think it depends on the nursery. One nursery we toured didn’t do any regular outside time until they were over 18 months old & had graduated to the toddler room. I haven’t personally seen a forest school yet that accepts kids under 2 years old. And they spend a lot of time educating parents on what layers are needed. The 2 year limit seems to be due to needing a certain level of walking & physical strength. So I kinda get it from the nurseries perspective, it’s possible other parents haven’t dropped off enough layers, or would rather their kids stay inside. But I’m with you, I’d rather my kids have time outside as long as they’re properly dressed.
My eldest is at a nursery where as long as they are dressed appropriately they can play outside and the door is always open so I have thermal clothes I send her in. However her nursery is from 2 years and haven’t had experience of anything else.
Do they not go for walks? Mine gos for walks to see all the christmas decorations and carol singers they normally go to the marina and park only time they didn't was when the wind was so bad we had weather warnings but even with rain and snow they wrap up and have a little fresh air x
Depends on the nursery, I visited a few and ultimately a big factor with my choice was if they spend time outdoors. One I visited had such a small outdoor space and from the sounds of it they spent little to no time outdoors, especially if the weather was adverse but had the occasional visit to the local park. The nursery I chose in the end they are out in all weather everyday (obviously not dangerous weather) and always dressed appropriately. Big green outdoor space and a huge focus on outdoor activities. This includes the babies.
I've been on both sides of this, as a nursery practitioner but now also as a mum. As a practitioner, I do get it. trying to wiggle however many babies/toddlers into snow suits, boots, hats, gloves, coats, scarfs, and then getting them out is a major hassle, only for them to get cold and upset after 10 minutes and then have to take them back in and do the whole undressing, plus changing clothes if they are wet. Especially if a lot of little ones in the room don't walk yet, it's a whole thing. Especially as a lot of parents don't bring waterproof shoes or spare clothes, so then we have to hunt through the whole nursery to find them spare clothes that fit, while understaffed. As a mum, my son goes to nursery two days a week and I don't think they take them in to the garden at the moment. I'd like for my son to have outdoor time and get fresh air, but obviously I don't dictate their routine. On the days I have him home with me I just make sure we have a walk every day 🤷♀️
My nursery make sure they get fresh air in the garden whatever the weather even if only for a short while so that excuse is a bit lame to be fair but I have had issue on nice days (months ago obviously) whereby they haven’t taken my LO properly out on a walk. My mums nursery do it often with their children in a big buggy but my LGs been at the nursery since May and I signed consent forms when applying to say they could and they’ve not bothered and I like her to get out for fresh air not just the garden so I think that’s naff too
