Infant Travel Necessities/Recommendations!

Hi all! We will be flying to Florida from CT with our almost 5 month old for Christmas and I’d love to know some of your travel essentials for infants! It’s not a terribly long flight but I’m definitely nervous and preparing for it to be a chaotic journey… would love to hear any hacks and tips as well as items that have made your lives easier traveling with a small baby (and husband too!🤣)

Are you breastfeeding? If so I highly recommend making sure the milk bags are frozen and in an insulated bag. If you are bringing a package of liquid formula bottles they will have to open each one to check them which essentially will spoil them before you can use them all so I recommend waiting to buy any liquid formula until you get to your destination. I’m not sure how it is for powder formula. We bought ear muffs that look like headphones for my little one and it’s supposed to help with ear popping they are made specifically for flying or being around loud noises. I got mine at the pharmacy at a local grocery store . If you’re staying at a hotel, specifically a nicer one, most will provide a bassinet, play pack option, for free so I would check with that to avoid having to tote that with you! Def bring a stroller that fits the car seat in so you don’t have to tote that by hand thru the airport as well. Just make sure to get a tag for it before take off Hope this helps!

@Kandice omg thank you SO much this is so helpful! I was wondering how they would go about the pre mixed formula bottles so I appreciate that heads up that they’d open each one 😅

@Molly absolutely! I lol earned the hard way and unfortunately had to throw away a 6 pack but - lesson learned. They however thanked me for having my breast milk frozen and didn’t touch it ! I would’ve been more sad to throw that away! lol

Also feeding on landing and takeoff help reduce the ear popping for the baby as they will be swallowing which helps with that

I’ve seen suction cup spinners you can stick on the window to keep them occupied! Me baby was too small to be interested in that when I flew a couple months ago but I think our babies would love something now!

@Kandice this also helped me. Thanks for the advice

I got a mom cozy travel bottle washing kit on Amazon that was super helpful!

If you’re taking a stroller and car seat, I would recommend checking it at the gate and getting the car seat and stroller airline bags. Keeps them clean and they have handles, the stroller one can be worn like a backpack. Definitely feed during take off and landing. We took our then 3 month old on a cross country flight and she actually did great! Check the airline because for ours the diaper bag counted as one of our personal items since she didn’t have her own seat.

@Kristina this is such a good point! I forgot I believe you can check the car seat to see if it’s airline compatible? Some may not be if I’m not mistaken and I forgot about that part!

Ready milk for before and after take off. Toys( suction spinner, black n white books, anything squeak) lol change diaper before boarding( you don’t want to change your baby in that small changing table on the plane) keep the baby awake if possible before boarding( if able to take a flight close to their nap time) And put them all in one bag within reach!

@Michelle going off of this I might even put a small little bag with everything for a diaper change in the diaper bag because if you do need to do a change a whole diaper bag can be too bulky to fit in the little bathroom with you. Mine unfortunately had a blowout on both takeoffs so idk if air pressure might effect it 😂

@Bella Gerry oh that’s the worst! Those plane changing tables are not the most comfortable ones! And they’re small! My 5 mon old is 26 inches 20lbs! He cried the whole time!

@Michelle mine was sliding around😂 he was born 21” and we flew when he was 3 months lol

@Bella Gerry my husband would just hand me a diaper and wipe pack to take with me to the bathroom to change her. Luckily we didn’t need anything else from the diaper bag those times!

Recently travelled from Florida to Massachusetts for 5days. I brought a travel stroller that we never used. We did use our evenflo stroller/carseat the whole time. Also a travel bag for the car seat/stroller. A baby carrier. A portable warmer for milk. A portable drying rack for bottles and pump parts. A bunting bag to keep baby warm in the car seat instead of bringing jackets or coats for baby.
