How much water are YOU drinking? if you're not properly hydrated, or eating well or sick, your milk will appear watery but it's still fine and good for your baby. Make sure to stay hydrated, eat well and it should balance out. I was sick last month. Didn't eat for a whole day and my milk appeared watery as well. Once I was able to eat and drink properly it went back to normal looking milk
I drink way more I’m thinking than I eat as bad as that sounds not on purpose . Still balancing life with a three year old and a week old post planned c section . Is there any good foods that I can eat to help boost this up and does watery milk interfere with your supply/ when should I worry I have bad anxiety so everytime something doesn’t look right with this as it’s my first time I’m like oh shit what did I mess up . I drink tons of water and gaterade and those hydration boost drinks I do combination feeding not sure if that helps either the advice
Honestly with food and water, I never really changed my diet just ate larger portions once I breastfeed. I did hiwever up.my fiber because pooping after birth is no joke lol. Watery milk doesn't interfere with your supply. It's just the first milk that comes out and often helps with babies thirst, it's called foremilk Then, hindmilk comes which is a little higher in fat, still helps with babies thirst but keeps them a little more full than foremilk. Also be careful with hydration drinks because you can accidentally overdose in electrolytes (which most of those drinks contain) i don't remember the exact amount for each but I wanna say it's probably around 1,000mg of each type of electrolyte (sodium, calcium, magnesium, potassium, phosphorus) but this varies for each person so just getting the ballpark amount you'd need and then look up how much your babybwould need because these will end up in your breastmilk. With combo feeding, make sure you're still pumping for that feed that baby gets formula.
This will tell your body you still need to make more milk. More milk removal = more milk produced. This was my mistake when I attempted to exclusively pump/breastfeed my second son and it killed my supply and led me into a mental health spiral. I had to quit after 6 months. For this 3rd baby I feel way better prepared and have been just focusing on milk removal, hydration and eating enough to sustain myself AND make milk. You burn a lot of calories when you express milk, so staying well fed and hydrated is super important. Good luck and try not to stress. This can really hinder your supply. Also fellow GAD sufferer here so I totally get your fears and concerns. It's okay, you're doing great!
What kind of foods did you eat that you found help I definitely need to fix my food intake and also I will keep an eye out about the hydration drinks for sure as that’s good to know
Would lactation cookies help my watery milk or is that silly
@Steph I've added more vegetables to my routine like spinach, broccoli, brussel sprouts, mushrooms. I've also increased portion size so instead of eating a cup of rice serving I'll eat like a cup and a half. I think they say to up your caloric intake by 600 or more when you're breastfeeding because everything you put in to sustain yourself, ends up going right to your milk for baby so you need excess to make sure there's enough left for you. Also continuing prenatal vitamins. From my personal experience I found that certain herbs dropped my supply. So I don't take things that are advertised as lactation supplements anymore. I took fenugreek at one point and it killed my supply so I just avoid that stuff altogether. The only true way to increase supply is milk removal. So even if you're nursing baby on one side, pump the breast that isn't being used for the feed and still offer the breast after.
@Leslie thank you so much your helping calm my anxiety so much 🥺🫶
Aw I'm glad! I totally get it! I had post partum anxiety with my second son and unfortunately I think I'm headed back there this third go around but hopefully once I start therapy again ill feel better. I have better coping skills this time around and I've also found focusing on what I actually can control has helped. I may not be able to truly control how much milk I can pump out, but I can control the nutrition of it so that's kinda helped a bit 😅
I exclusively pumped for 1 year with my first I took these when I was breastfeeding. I don't remember exactly why I started, I did have "lumps" in my breast but never developed a clog. This + using a warm compress on your breast can improve the flow of milk. Sometimes the fat in your milk can stick together and stay in the breast. I also found my morning milk to be more watery because I was going longer between pumping sessions once my baby started sleeping through the night at about 3-4 months. https://www.legendairymilk.com/products/organic-sunflower-lecithin?currency=USD&variant=12106166304810&utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=Google%20Shopping&stkn=3212297cce10&tw_source=google&tw_adid=724209395907&tw_campaign=6458576391&gad_source=1&gclid=Cj0KCQiAst67BhCEARIsAKKdWOkIGTJtrnvSsujiPDKNb18o14Wv8nHZQStYUhDE9yxRrFtV42_UrVkaAr6MEALw_wcB
If I’m reading right and you are one week post partum then your milk will still be transitioning from colostrum into mature milk and this takes several weeks. As long as baby is gaining weight then I wouldn’t worry what your milk actually looks like as there’s such a variety to breastmilk and it changes all the time. (It’s normal for a newborn to lose weight at first then start gaining). As others have said as long as you’re feeding on demand and ensuring you’re keeping yourself hydrated and fed then you should be fine.
You likely won’t see the effects of your PP sessions for a good few days yet and it can take a little while for your body to recognise that it needs to produce more milk, so very likely this won’t be the cause of the change in consistency of your milk, I’ve been PP-ing 1-2 times a day for a couple weeks now and I can’t say I’ve noticed a difference in my milk consistency. Make sure you’re staying hydrated and eating plenty, if you’re not getting enough fat in your diet this could be causing the fat content in your milk to be a bit lower. Always have a drink and a snack while you’re pumping, it helps me massively.
It's only meant to have a little layer of fat. The watery/lactose part is so very important for their growth and so many other things. Your BM is the perfect food for your baby.
