I had low papp-a during my first pregnancy. In my experience, it was nothing to really worry about. I suggest not goggling it because there are lots of horror stories with worst-case scenarios. Essentially papp a is a protein found in the placenta, low papp a means the placenta may have to work harder. I was prescribed aspirin to help with it and took it until around 32 weeks.
As Emma said, it can be linked to smaller babies, but my little boy has born at 7lb 3, so not small at all. And the extra scans were lovely 😊
Ah yes I forgot to mention the aspirin - you will likely be prescribed that too
Thank you Samantha, Emma for your responses. Really really reassuring because I did go through a Google spiral with it! I hadn't heard of it and had no idea so it came as a bit of a surprise. I'll see it now as a good thing to have extra scans etc xxx
I had this, it’s pretty common and generally nothing to worry about. It’s a protein produced by the placenta and if it’s low you have a higher risk of having a smaller baby that’s all so they do the extra scans to monitor growth and the blood flow to the placenta to ensure it continues to work properly. Majority of times it doesn’t cause any issues - just enjoy the extra scans 🙂 my little girl was on the smaller side when born (5lb 7) but we don’t know if it was down to that or whether she would have been small anyway, either way there were no issues
