advice about culture

hi all, this is very vulnerable for me to be asking for advice about but i want to be the best mom i can. my son is mixed (im white and his dad is black) and his dad is not in the picture at all. i’ve seen a lot of discourse online about how sometimes kids that are mixed that grow up with a white parent feel like they don’t have any connection to black culture and feel shorted or have trouble with both identities because of this. i live in a very predominantly white area as well and so we aren’t surrounded by many folks of color. i was wondering if anyone had any ideas for ways i could incorporate black culture into my sons upbringing. i know some people think you should be “colorblind” and not “see race” but i think it’s important for my son to be able to appreciate what and who he comes from. any advice is appreciated. i hope this didn’t come out as tone deaf but i truly just want him to be able to be in touch with his identity and not feel like i didn’t make an effort his whole life to incorporate aspects of the culture he comes from.

I think your consideration is appreciated by many and would be by your son as well. Do you have cultural events in your area? Like MLK Day parades and such? Any way you can put him in diverse environments?

@Melanie Definitely! We live in socal so we have a wide range of cities near us. That’s such a great idea and something I didn’t even consider! Thank you! :)

I also need help as her father is not able to be present in her life he’s trini 😭

Omg I hope you and your family are doing okay in the fires! I used to live down there, you're in a great place for him to be surrounded by his other half and more!

@Brianna I honestly thank you moms for even thinking of the cultures! Trinis seem to have a really unique culture, is there a community where you're at?

@Melanie unfortunately no :,(

MUSIC BABY MUSIC!!!!! First and last. Oldies only… keep him connected to our greatness. Aretha, Etta, Sly and the family stone, Otis Redding, lots of JAZZ. So on.. show him the beautiful things about it.. you got to know how easy it is to love us! that’s key.. also do some deep research. This takes time. But note that Black Americans have already been separated from who we are. It is IN us to rise above. it’s already IN us to find the light in the darkness and make do from without. Don’t forget that. What you NEED is already THERE. Amen. I’m mixed black Mexican and Italian. But blackness it’s not something you can escape or tone down!!
