Slimy poo

My 9weeks old now cries, and stretches whenever he wants to poo and pass out wind. His tummy also rumbles loudly. And again, I noticed a change in his poo. It now looks slimy. Should I be worried? As a matter of fact, I am worried.

Hope your little one is fine and it's nothing! I'm not sure if it's the same issue but we went through something similar at 2 months, some poo was slimy and thready (looked like cheese in a grilled cheese sandwich at times between bum and diaper - so sorry if I put you off of melted cheese forever). He wasn't constipated but struggled to poo his usual soft poo. He dropped in percentiles from week 8 to 12 - may or may not be related, I was using nipple shields the entire time maybe he wasn't getting enough milk. He is now 15 weeks and still struggles with poop, pulls at the breast to help himself for some reason :) breastfeeding consultant today said when they're born pooping is a reflex, but as they grow they have to figure out how to coordinate muscles to poop so the struggle is normal. I didn't escalate to the GP or 111 or health visitors as colour looked ok, but maybe those could put your mind at ease?

Maybe explore if he has any symptoms of CMPA or try a different formula if formula fed, my little boy struggled weeks 6-9 and when we swapped his formula it really made a huge difference. We swapped to goat milk formula so don't think he has true cmpa but it is much more gentle on his tummy and he is much more comfortable and happy!

@tugba i dnt think he is constipated because his poo is soft. I can't just stand the way he struggles. The Gp suggested infacol because he thinks it's colic. The slimy poo is a new development. I didn't mention that to the GP.

@Amy he's been on this formular since birth. This change just happened recently

At around 8 week baby has to consciously start learning to poo rather than it being instinct. When they strain it can result in extra mucus as it helps it along and this can be noticed in nappies sometimes. It's worse when they teeth or dribble more as well x

@Naomi so does that mean it's nothing to worry about?

I wouldn't worry too much a little mucus can be normal if it becomes alot or changes/gets worse speak to your health visitor or gp. The only time they were concerned with my daughter was when she had blood and mucus in her stools x

My baby had the same symptoms around the same age. What helped a lot it was massage his belly. I used also push his knees to the belly and old for a bit and massage each side of his tummy. In his case he was having issues to poo. I think you should give it a try. Hope it helps.
