Midwife.

I have had about 5 appointments now and not met my actual midwife I had the initial telephone call with her. But another lady that’s on my badger notes that’s part of my card team has seen me for 3 out of the 5 is this normal? Is your midwife usually with you for your birth or is it just a midwife on duty? I suffer with anxiety and like it when I know the person I’m going through medical situation with so they know my triggers and worries ect.

There's no such thing as your "actual midwife". Community midwife is who you normally see during your appointments and it doesn't even have to be the same person every time. The midwife who delivers your baby will be whoever is on duty at the hospital. You may even have several as they change between shifts (I had two, one when I came in at night and then another one who came in in the morning) x

That’s fine. I just wasn’t sure how things went. Just when they say at the beginning this is your midwife I thought that would be the person you see all the way throughout or atleast the majority

They used to assign you a midwife, in my last pregnancy 2023 i had the same midwife throughout for appointments but this time round i’ve had someone different every time. it’s all changed a good bit. As above, you will have a different midwife or a few for the actual birth :)

@Victoria I had different community midwives for my first pregnancy (2022), this time I'm supposed to have the same one all the way through (but only because she said she preferred it this way), subject to our mutual schedules :) Doesn't apply to delivery of course as she doesn't even work at my hospital as far as I know! I think it hugely depends on the trust, the midwife team or even a specific midwife!

Im in south Wales and I've had the same midwife every appointment, I don't think she'll be there for birth you just have whatever midwifes are on shift but for appointments up until then the same lady. Maybe it's different in your area x

@Paulina yes definitely. Up until recently our trust always assigned one midwife. They said they just can’t manage it anymore due to staffing etc. i’ve not had a great experience this time. lots of mistakes the service has been appalling to be honest. last appointment my midwife gave someone else’s results!
