Baby latching and then falling asleep

Ladies, it’s 3am and I’m up with my 3 day old baby. He cries, we change diaper, I put him on the boob, he feeds for a bit, falls asleep, repeat, falls asleep on the boob. If I try to put him in his crib, he starts crying, I put him outside n boob, feeds a bit, then falls asleep on the boob. We try to touch his face and feet to wake him up. Sometimes he does and continues to feed. Sometimes he doesn’t. Has anyone dealt with this kind of behaviour / pattern before ?

Yes. Baby is cluster feeding and is just regulating your milk supply. It'll pass soon

We fed our girl in just a diaper. And we would gently blow on her to keep her awake. Or tickle the chin to keep her sucking. You can also gently rub their head. Etc. You just have to keep stimulating them.

We kept track of nursing minutes so we knew approx how long a "full feed" was. If he fell asleep after 5 min we new to keep stimulating them. If it was closer to a usual feed time then we new we were okay. Do you know the hand trick? If their hand is tight in a fist and their arm is locked, they are hungry. If their hand is relaxed and arm relaxed they are full

Tips to keep him up. Keep him undressed, in diaper only for the feed. Get something cold like a cool wash cloth to touch to his feet or belly or legs etc. gently rub feet and feet like you are but gently rub his head or collar bones to stimulate. Towards the end of the feed you can redress and swaddle if you do then nurse to sleep after. It may just be cluster feeding as well and it will pass but I know it sucks .I’m sorry mama I’ve been there

yes! trying feeding with just a diaper & caress his face, ears, feet, etc!

So normal! My baby would feed every 45 minutes and it was SO TIRING. Hang in there it’s soo rewarding they’re super sleepy until like 1.5 months!

My two week old is the same way, definitely tiring I’m right there with you!

Yes, very normal. They are designed to fall asleep when breastfeeding. There's something in breastmilk that makes babies sleepy, as well as the closeness to you where they feel safe and secure. Try to keep your baby awake for a bit whilst feeding, but if they look really tired, let them sleep for a bit. They will wake up again for a feed. The early days of breastfeeding can be very demanding. Prioritise your sleep as much as you can! I couldn't put my daughter anywhere near a crib for the first few months, they just want to be close to us and it's absolutely normal! You're doing amazingly!

Night2/3 is the worst where you’re milk is about to come in and baby is getting hungrier. Tonight should be better! If it happens again, try some breast compressions. Also try starting the feed then changing nappy halfway through to wake him again for more
