Anyone drive for uber eats or skip/fast food delivery? (Question below for you). Non driver perspectives also welcome.

We are getting a major snow storm right now, like the roads are treacherous out there. I’m having a friendly debate with my family about whether or not it’s ok to order food. Question: Would you prefer that restaurants pause or cancel delivery for the night so you can stay safe but miss the shift(💰), or want stay on the roads and deliver to people as long as they are patient and tip well?

My family specifically won’t order food for delivery in bad weather. A lot of people probably want the money but it’s peoples health and safety at risk for the money and I just wouldn’t want to be an order that caused someone to get hurt.

I personally won’t order food in inclement weather. I haven’t seen it in a very long time but I have seen thunderstorms bad enough in my area where uber eats would allow orders to be placed. Maybe there should be an up charge? Untimely it’s up to the worker some people really need to the money regardless of the weather.

@Elizabeth I don’t either. I think if there’s no demand then they won’t be required to work in these conditions. Like literally putting their life on the line for what usually amounts to less than minimum wage. My husband thinks it should be their choice and if they’re willing to do it then people shouldn’t feel bad about ordering in blizzard conditions.

It’s their choice to go out and work but I think it can come from a place of desperation not desire and yeah idk I just don’t feel right about it

I think it depends! How far they have to go, type of car they have, if it light or dark, type of experience they have driving which we unfortunately can’t tell when we order. Unfortunately probably depends how much you need the money. Probably still be open but change delivery distance and give you extra time to get there. My general rule is if I would drive in it I will order. Then again I live in the UK and there’s on mass panic at 1/2 inches of snow. So our version of a snow storm and treacherous roads is probably very different to other countries!

I saw a tiktok during one of our storms a few months ago that said “wow the weather is so awful I can’t leave the house! Time to order a low paid immigrant to bring me chicken nugget” Since then I won’t order during harsh weather

I think if you order food when weather is bad in your area you are very selfish why endanger another person for a take away ? It would have to be a last resort for my child to eat

My thought is for businesses to stay open if able, but I avoid ordering - I’m sure some struggling families or someone disabled needs access to food delivery more than I do

@Lydia yea, that’s what gets me. I had the most nerve racking drive home from work. Saw many cars in the ditch, accidents, and emergency vehicles zooming past. My 30 min commute took almost 2 hours and I had to take a random convoluted route because all the normal routes were blocked or totally backed up by accidents. It would be such a dick move to get home and be like “wow, thank God I didn’t die or total my vehicle. Let’s make someone risk the same thing to deliver me a pizza for $5. Don’t worry, I’ll shoot them an extra $10 for their trouble.” I agree with you and @Elizabeth that the person is likely desperate for the money, but would probably prefer to forgo the money for a guilt-free, safe, night off.

@Genevieve I see you’re in Ontario and dude the roads have been INSANE lately so many storms and bad conditions

I used to be a door dash driver and I personally loved snowy days, I'd get lots of orders and great tips. I do understand the concern for safety as well though. I have an all wheel drive that handles very well and have been driving in snow since 16 but I have definitely seen drivers out there in cars that shouldn't be out there and that can be dangerous. Honestly, I think either way is okay. Not ordering for fear of safety makes sense to me but I also know how it feels to be a driver and need to be making money. I also drove on bad weather days out of choice and not force, if something would've happened I would never have blamed the person ordering the food because at the end of the day I chose to be out there driving.

@Elizabeth yeah, I’m describing the drive from Hamilton to Brantford. Not sure how well you know the area, but I went through Dundas because the 403 was a total shit show. At the intersection of Main and Governor’s Road every direction had either an accident or cars that couldn’t make it up a hill. I pulled into the Tim Hortons and called my husband to say I was trapped and didn’t know what to do. I waited until the least congested way cleared up a bit and then took the most convoluted and scary route home following my GPS. I went up the mountain via highway 8 and it reminded me of a scene from a movie where people are going up a winding snow covered road in the Himalayas or something. At one point I had to make a left turn onto highway 52 and my life was seriously at risk. No visibility or traction and no gaps in the oncoming traffic in either direction. 😮‍💨

@Genevieve yup my husband takes highway 4 from Exeter to London for work and it’s been bad he says every day he sees multiple cars in the ditch 😭

I don’t but my step mum does and she was working during storm Eowyn. It was down to the drivers discretion whether or not they wanted to work during it.

I’m confused by this. For door dash/uber eats I thought people worked when they wanted to?? I go by the fact that if someone wants my money they’ll pick up the order, if not I’d have no driver. Obviously I worry about anyone driving in bad conditions I’m just thinking if someone wants to make money and not “miss a work day” why am I thinking I shouldn’t order food?

@Shannon some drivers are gig workers and some restaurants have in-store drivers. Regardless, if a gig worker usually works on a Friday night and chooses not to because of the storm they are still de facto losing a shift even if they weren’t “scheduled” to work. If people think it’s too dangerous to be on the roads (like yesterday when there was an “avoid all unnecessary travel” advisory issued by Environment Canada), but still choose to order food, then it shows they have very little regard for the lives of delivery drivers. “If they’re desperate enough for the money, they’ll risk their life to bring me a pizza, and I’m okay with that because it’s their choice.”
