Cavities 😭

Found out at the dentist yesterday my 4 year old has a cavity on their back molar and they're concerned where it looks big he'll need to be sedated 😭 this broke my heart 😭 i feel so guilty and like I failed him. The other option is obviously the laughing gas but both make me so nervous 😩 if you've gone through this, what choice did you go with? What seemed easier on your little?

My son wasn’t sedated for dentist stuff. But they sedated him when he was 18 months to unclog his tear duct. He was really cranky after and screamed. He wouldn’t even breastfeed which was his comfort at the time. It’s heartbreaking when they wake up. But he was fine after he calmed down.

My 5 year old just had a cavity filled and I wish I would've done the sedation. They did laughing gas which didn't help much and then after doing the numbing gel (that she spit out when they put it on) they tried doing the shot. It ended up being a 3 hour ordeal. Every time they went in with the shot she freaked out and tried to get up. Then once they gave her the shot after fighting for an hour, she wasn't numb enough so they had to give another and by then she knew it hurt, so she refused and then bit the dentist's finger. After another hour of trying to do the shot they said send her somewhere that will sedate her. I finally got her to do it when I explained we would have to do this all over again and then she finally let them but she turned her head repeatedly and they almost missed. If she ever has another filling I will definitely be doing the sedation!! Hope you find what works for you and your little!!

@Sierra this is what I'm worried about. I'm scared the laughing gas won't be enough then he'll have to be sedated anyways and have twice as much stuff in his system 😩 it almost seems more "worth it" to do the sedation but I just feel so bad he'll have to be put to sleep 😭 the one time I was put to sleep i couldn't stop crying and barely remember the rest of the day, it was a shitty experience 😩

Also don't feel guilty or like you failed him!! It happens a lot and my 5 year old has learned to let me floss every night after this experience and she used to refuse before. How is he with shots? My 5 year old doesn't like them to begin with so that didn't help matters. My daughter handled getting her blood drawn way better than the numbing shot so every kid is different just go with what you feel is best for him and what feels right to you.

@Sierra he was pretty traumatized after his flu shot this year 😅 he wouldn't stop talking about it for like a month lol I really don't know how he'll do with a mouth shot where those hurt way worse 😩

Yeah I feel like shots are one of the kids worst nightmares!! I dread those mouth shots when I have to get them. Every time they said close your eyes and tried to go in she'd stare at it and try to scream, then after the dentist got his finger bit he said I'm done and walked away lol. Thankfully after begging the hygienist to keep trying, she did but yeah it was a process. They recommended I do sedation if she gets another filling in the future they said they wouldn't try that again.

@Sierra the poor dentist 😅 I feel like no matter the amount of explaining you do to toddlers, it's still scary because they don't understand 😩 the hygienist got frustrated with him yesterday because he wasn't breathing through his nose while trying to get xrays 😅 i know sedation will probably be the best option, it's just breaks my heart 😭 he's going to be so spoiled to whole day after 😅

I know and I was thinking what you're just giving up?! When he walked away but I can't really blame him 🤣 it is hard especially at that age to get them to listen when they don't know what's going on since it's out of the norm!! Yes I took mine for ice cream and a little toy for her bravery it took a lot of bribes. You will both be okay in the end it'll just be nice to have it done with and not have to worry about it anymore. Best of luck to you and him ❤️ Someday it'll all be a memory and one you share together with him knowing you had his back and were there for him!

Sedation has more risk, but is a better experience. Being held down for mouth shots and drilling as a kid can give them issues with the dentist for life. My dad still talks about his experience as a child, and I have my own as well. My daughter is almost five, and since she has had no cavities, she walks into the dentist gleefully and can go through the cleanings on her own while I help with her brother. She has such a positive feeling right now, I wouldn't want to traumatize her that way.

@Bonny that's also how I'm feeling as well, he hasn't been the dentist a bunch of times yet to feel 100% comfortable when he goes. I wouldn't want something like this to scare him away from wanting to go and get just regular cleanings.. but I'm also scared him being sedated will also traumatize him 😩

@Sierra i just called and they said they're going to use the nitrous on him and now I'm really nervous 😩 I'm trying to explain the process to him a little bit so he's not so scared but I don't think he's understanding already 😩 the hardest part is going to be trying to act calm like it's a normal appointment so he doesn't get nervous too 🥲

My daughter got put under for awhile to do work on her teeth because it’s a lot easier and less painful for them when they do the work. The sedation affected her really bad when she woke up she was combative. It was very hard to see her like that but after she calmed down she slept and then she was fine. Just drowsy.

I hope it goes smoothly! Will they resort to sedation if needed?? The place we went to didn't do sedation so we didn't have the option to

Also what dentist doesnt tell you is FLUORIDE ANTI CAVITY TOOTH PASTE is sooo bad for your little ones teeth. My 4 year old had “cavities” going across his top front teeth and my son brushes his teeth every morning and night and he LOVES water so “to much sugar” isnt a problem for my little ones. I found out that his teeth are needing to be remineralized and Hydroxyapatite is THE BEST THING for him. It remineralizes his teeth and they look like new and it also heals cavities. We use the “Guru Nanda” brand from walmart , but Im trying this kids kind off tiktok shop that I heard about. I thought I was failing my sons mouth! 🤯. And after a good brush i use coconut oil as a finisher. It works just like the hydroxyapatite, but it helps whiten the teeth as well.

Its able to be healed and remineralized if the teeth arent to far gone from the cavities. Its definitely a must try.
