Why do I get so much back... why did they take SO MUCH?!

So I did my taxes yesterday after work.. & I'm not complaining at all that I got more than I expected back.. but I am a bit bothered the IRS would take that much... To preface, I'm on EBT & Medicaid for the first time myself because we have #2 on the way. We both work fulltime, mortgage etc. But I'm just a bit upset. I probably wouldn't be struggling/ essentially broke if this much wasn't taken from me.. my tax person said because I make a very low income (public teacher) the IRS will usually always owe me but I also claimed my current baby this year (baby lol she's 5) Idk am I stupid? Like should I just be happy I'm fortunate to work & get daycare help but also allowed to get a big tax refund? I'm just.. I don't wanna be angry but this could of helped me when I got in my car accident in June lol. & many other things like I said maybe I wouldn't need EBT (not that I'm complaining about that either, I'm trying not to feel like less of a parent because we need EBT now)

How many dependents do you claim on your w4? If you claim 0 they take more of your income. You can claim yourself and any dependents. So if you claimed 2 (yourself and your child) they'd take less out of your pay. Downside of that is depending on how much you make then you could potentially end up owing at tax time. Or you could claim one or whatever. I would think your tax preparer would be able to tell you what's best for your situation.

I was told by an old boss a long time ago we can legally claim 6 dependents on our W2. I even did that at one job. I also heard that advice on the Today Show or something this year or last.

I think I understand what you're saying. Throughout the year they take so much, we know we need all that today, right now, but they have to take it out. Fortunately we get a nice amount at the beginning of the year.
