Fast let down/tons of leaking

Second baby, she’s 1 week today and I’m over producing to the point where I can’t keep a shirt dry. When I go to feed her especially on my left side idk if my let down is too fast or if I’m already leaking so much she doesn’t know what to do and keeps pulling off and on and I can tell she doesn’t like it. When she pulls away and honestly just as soon as I pull my breast out of my bra the milk is FLOWING, so it straight from the start gets all over the place & her and is a big mess. Any suggestions?

First if you don’t already have breast pads get some! Do you pump and latch? A tip for a strong let down is to feed leaning back or side laying.

@Haley 💚 yes running through breast pads! Hate wasting the milk I need to get collectors I got rid of them last time not sure why. I do not pump and latch, I’ll nurse her and if she doesn’t get to both sides or it feels like she hasn’t emptied me then I’ll pump or use the haaka. Is the side lying position like the football hold? I go back and forth between that and cross body it just depends on where my toddler is lol

I was an over supplier with both my kids. I made the mistake of pumping too much. My body basically thought I was feeding twins bc I was freezing 40-50 ounces a day. I worked on not pumping as long when I did pump and then eventually got to the point where I only pumped at my bedtime (if my baby gave me a long stretch) or when I was away from my baby. I used a haakaa sometimes as well. I would lean all the way back to feed. Side laying is when you lay on your side and let the baby lay next to you feeding. My second was almost fed like this 100% of the time, even with my toddler running around. I would just lay on the floor or couch if I couldn’t get in bed. I didn’t want to decrease my supply until it regulated around 6 weeks bc I’m ok with being a little of an over supplier.

You pumping is causing the excessive milk supply. The next best thing is buy milk collectors if u want to continue that route. Usually the baby’s appetite is what determines your let down amount but u interfering with that is telling ur body that u must supply more.

I have the exact same and ended up getting some of the large blanket muslins, i tuck one side into my non-feeding boob and tuck the other side under baby in a way that when she inevitably breaks off it catches the flow. Its a shame to waste but at least this keeps us dry. I spoke to a breastfeeding support worker about this as baby is gulpung down a lot of air with the fast flow and coughing and they suggested trying the Koala hold and then leaning back into the sofa/cushions propped on bed. Its a tricky one to master i find though!

@Haley 💚 oh yeahhhh I did side lying some with my son but haven’t yet with my daughter. I fear if I lay down to nurse my son will jump all over us lol. I’m with you I don’t want to decrease my supply but also want her to feel comfortable. I lost my supply around 4 months with my son and an so scared of doing it again. I think it was because I wasn’t pumping at all and he wasn’t emptying me but I’m just making that up I really have no idea. I went from over producing by using the haaka to drops and not sure why. I want to avoid that this time but am probably making things worse.

@Elo yes I totally agree. Like I said up above I’m just worried about my supply dropping like last time and am probably making things hard on myself and her because of that. Also my breasts just hurt if I don’t empty myself but it’s probably a cycle lol. I had the same issues at first last time but wasn’t pumping just using the haaka but I guess same thing. I think I’ll go ahead and get collection cups again to help out. Thanks!

@Cesca I’m dying bc I keep finding muslins in my bra after forgetting to take them out when nursing. It’s real pretty over here 8 days in lol. I’ll look up the Koala hold! Thanks!

@Kelsey I used my haakaa to maintain my supply. I wouldn’t use it every time but I think it helped. I also pumped 1-2 times a day once my supply was regulated.
