Toddler not walking yet…

My 17 month old is still not walking. He likes to stand up everywhere but will not use his push walker; I also hold his hands so he can take steps but he refuses & wants to sit down out of fear from falling. He seems very content with being on the floor & will rather run with his knees instead lol Any tips or advice?

Does your son cruise along furniture? If so, no health visitor would be concerned. My son ‘walked’ and ran on his knees for ages! One day (the day before he turned 18 months) he just got up and started walking. Try not to panic! I think some children just take longer to find the confidence to start walking.

Try to go on grass areas , put a mat and leave your kid without shoes and socks . Go in morning or afternoon when sun is out and grass are dry . Let him feel grass , crawl on it . Don’t bother to hold him or stop him . Keep his favorite toys at some distance . It really helps . Grass is very sensory for human body to release stress and feel freedom. Keep doing for 1-2 weeks regularly , you may see good results.

@Ellie Yes!! He likes to stand up on the couch & will use me as an obstacle course 😆 Aww okay, this gives me so much peace of mind! Thank you <3

My kiddo started walking more when I took him out more to the kids playgrounds where he saw other kiddos bigger and smaller then him walking around. Some kiddos can be stubborn. My oldest didn’t walk till he was 18 months where my youngest started when he was 13 months

My LO walked at 18 months ( just as we were getting ready to make a GP referral) no advice, just know you're not alone and it's normal - some kids are just lazy!!

Put furniture close to each other so when he is standing he can easily move to the next furniture in one or two steps than crawling.

Is he wearing shoes or is he barefoot? They prefer barefoot as it will give them the sensory input and get used to the feeling. If he's bossing you around with his words 😂...ignore him and let him go get the toy or come chasing after you for milk or snack. Get rid of the walker. Make it a fun game and put whatever he likes away from him to encourage him to walk (can do this along the couch).

My baby was 10 weeks premature he is almost 16 months and just took his first few independent steps. We have been seeing a physical therapist for about 10 months. Personally, I would ask for a referral if it were my child. When we started pt, they told me that they like children showing signs of walking and standing independently for a few seconds by 14-16 months. If baby isn’t doing those things they like to see them pretty quickly to get them walking before 20 months. Getting him to cruise furniture and maybe getting him to play in a kneel/or half kneeling position would help. There are so many pediatric physical therapy videos on YouTube to give helpful tips! Our PMR physician also told us walkers/push walkers/bouncers can interfere with gross motor skills and to avoid them. Good luck mama!

I think the latest they say is like 19 months! Anytime before that anything can happen, so don’t worry!

I took my sons push walker away and took over the livingroom each day by putting all of the chairs from our dinning table and placed them in the living room close to each other and once he was confident walking across them all I moved them further and further apart it woe sooo well x

thank you all for your advice! 💕
