Which early scan method?

Hi there, l am thinking about getting an early viability scan next week when I am 7 weeks. Did a bit of research and found out about two methods, transabdominal and transvaginal. It looks like the transvaginal is more accurate as it can also rule out a possible ectopic pregnancy. Any experiences with either?

You probably won’t have a choice tbh, they might try abdominal first but unlikely to see anything that early. The vaginal one doesn’t hurt x

Depends on gestation and your BMI. They will try abdominal first and if it doesn’t work then go to vaginal. They will see on abdominal USS where the baby is (if in utero) so no need for TVS to rule out ectopic

I’ve had transvaginal, it’s a bit uncomfortable but as long as the right tech is doing it it doesn’t hurt..and like stated above, it’s more accurate that early, I don’t think they start abdominal until 2nd trimester or the end of 1st at least

I had an early scan at 8 weeks and they done transvaginal as it’s more accurate and they can measure baby properly as well

I’d say 7 weeks they’ll do transvaginal and that is the better option tbh as everything is so much smaller you’ll see more clearly that way. Have you ever had a smear? It’s more comfortable than that if you have. The wand is pretty thin they pop some gel and insert it you barely feel much then once baby pops up on screen you forget it’s even in there. When I had my first one the place I went to wouldn’t allow anyone other than my partner in a vaginal scan so I’d be mindful of that if taking anyone else just incase x also I’d make sure the place you book offers both types as some only offer abdominal meaning they’ll ask you to come back if not clear enough xx

I had a a scan at 6w4d and they did external scan, you could see everything x

A lot of private scan places have both so just check before you book. I had abdominal at 7 weeks by choice and we could see sacs but no detail and not heartbeat so vaginal will probably be better. Or wait a couple of weeks and then the detail is much better!

Just had a transvaginal at 6 weeks, you could see everything properly, they check your uterus and ovaries and even told me from which one my egg came from 🙂 if you never had one before (I’ve had about 4 before getting pregnant) there’s nothing to be afraid of, no pain, no harm to you or the baby. Good luck!

Thanks all for your comments, that’s super helpful!

I had a scan at 6 weeks, they started with trans abdominal and could see everything fine, so showed me and put me at ease. However, I was very bloated so she asked to do a transvaginal scan to get a clearer picture. They typically will try abdominal first and will go to transvaginal if they’re unable to get a clear picture xx
