Sleep Training

What is the big deal with sleep training?? I see posts about mums being desperate but refuse to do sleep training. This is by no means a dig im just thinking I’ve missed something.

I’m scared to try sleep training because of what I’ve heard! Even though we’re desperate now. I’ve heard that babies learn that you won’t come and help them when they’re crying at night or something. I’ve heard that self-settling as a baby is a myth, they just learn that you won’t be there to help them when they have a problem!

@Charley omg really!! Im so sorry that’s awful!! My friend hired a sleep coach and he said it was amazing and I was reading his notes and couldn’t understand what was wrong with it but it doesn’t allow you to leave a baby crying for longer than. 5 mins thank god and my girl cry’s like that when I make a bottle xx

I heard the same as Charley, that they don't actually settle they just know you won't come so they don't cry anymore. I'm so lucky our girl sleeps (relatively) well and we live in a small flat so I can be there in seconds if she cries but I know it must be so tough for some who don't want their baby to feel like they don't care. X

There’s lots of studies (supposedly) that show the cortisol in their brain stays high even when they’re ‘sleep trained’ and quiet, so although they no longer cry at night, they still wake up the same amount and feel the same level of stress, but they’ve adapted not to cry because they know their caregiver isn’t coming to support them and it’s safer to stay quiet (biologically speaking). I have no idea if there’s truth in that but I’ve heard it a lot and the thought of my baby being terrified into silence makes me want to cry, although only slightly more than the 1h sleep instalments I’m getting make me want to cry 😂😂😂 I have no judgement about those that do as they’re living their best lives while I’m slowly going mad on no sleep, but I’m too soft to try it in case the stuff about their stress levels is true
