How do I know if my toddler is “abnormal”?

So my toddler was described by her daycare teacher as “being in her own world”. She does interact with us and her younger sister and other children at school, is somewhat on par with speech for her age but sometimes just won’t answer or do what she’s asked if she doesn’t feel like it. Following instructions is hit or miss day by day which I know is very toddler behaviour but at what point is it odd? She will scrape her food into the garbage at the end of dinner, knows the process, I love it but then sometimes I ask ber a question 5x and still no response because she’s looking at a dog outside the window. Today she was being assessed for swimming lessons and again the phrase “in her own world” came up and now I fear it’s a pattern. Is she somewhat abnormal? Now I’m questioning everything. She’s my first child and I haven’t been around kids much so I just don’t know.

I’m a special ed teacher and the word “abnormal” isn’t really typically used anymore!😞 if you think these behaviors have been a pattern, have you brought it up to her pediatrician? I believe every well child checkup they have, you would have to answer an ASQ (ages and stages questionnaire) and then it would kind of give the ped an idea of where your child is currently at in different areas of development. If you are still concerned about hearing daycare teachers/swim teachers mentioning the phrase “in her own world” bring that up to her pediatrician and then hopefully he or she will give you a referral to get her tested! Hope it makes sense!

As for my toddler following instructions is very challenging as well most likely the same as any other toddler with the same age as ours. My daughter is our first born she spends majority of her time at home with me and we rarely go out to socialize as well. She likes solitary play and when we do get a chance to go out and socialize she likes doing parallel play. When we ask her questions she is just now comprehending on how to answer them properly but we still do alot of prompting as to what the correct answer to the question will be!
