Labour at Queen’s hospital

Morning ! Has anyone given birth at Queen’s hospital recently? As I have just moved to Romford and the nearest hospital is Queens. I have heard of some bad experiences but they were all a few years ago. Thanks 🤗

Yes! In December. An amazing experience, in their birthing centre. Would highly recommend their birthing centre, and they do tours there too (ask your midwife for info). Happy to answer any more q’s ☺️

I've had 3 fairly positive Birth experiences there. They tend to be slow moving you to the ward after you have baby but other than that they're alright. The nurses were very lovely when I had my daughter 17 months ago x

Had a lovely experience in May in the labour ward 😊

Yes, in April overall was really positive the midwives are lovely feel free to message me. I ended up on labour ward and having emergency c section so didn't experience the birth centee

I’ve also had 2 positive birth experiences there in the last 18months. I too was skeptical about giving birth there due to the things I heard but both times I couldn’t fault them!

Yes in January, at the birth centre, the midwives were great, especially one called Alieta I think. But it was the first birth of the year, and they weren't busy, so maybe depends on this as well. My first was born in Lewisham birth centre and I really preferred my experience at Queens. I could do whatever I wanted to go through the pain, the midwives gave me choices and the freedom to scream, move , and change position as much as I wanted (unmedicated). They gave suggestions but never force anything. Don't hesitate to message me if you have questions

I did 1 year ago, the Labour ward is good but the birthing centre was awful, very restrictive, there were 2 nurses, one very rude and one clueless training. They started shouting at me bcs I entered in the pool, despite being told to enter the pool in the first place, from there was down the hill.

Gave birth in november was good experience

Yes! I gave birth last week and they were very supportive and quick, I went to triage and was seen to immediately as they could see I was contracting, found out I was already 6cm and rushed me to the birth centre/then the labour ward. I was lucky enough to have a midwife and a student which made the experience really good. Let me know if you have any questions xx

I'm one of those bad experiences from a few years ago. However I would still go back there to have my second baby. Staff were doing their best and I met some truly lovely midwives and doctors. My advice for you is - Please talk to other mums after getting any advice from Queens. I was very innocent at the time and let the hospital talk me into 'drug free childbirth' & they talked me out of buying formula so I wouldn't be lazy and focus on breastfeeding. My child wouldn't breast feed ultimately and the ward didn't have formula I gave it 8 hrs and had had some milk brought up to the hospital And was told I may have damaged my child by not feeding him earlier (I hadn't thank god but it's not what you want to go through) I was there in my breastfeeding nightie hadn't slept in 24 hrs, with 2 breastfeeding specialists, just to have constant nagging about my ability to breastfeed. I wasn't discharged for almost 48 hrs because of it the breastfeeding pressure nearly broke me. Just have a contingency.

For pain relief as well maybe it's changed but Queens were really pushing the birthing pools no drugs approach. Even when I was being induced. Which you learn late pain med free is just not feasible. During the actual childbirth I could not fault them however.

I would completely disregard the above message if unmedicated birth is something you wanted. It definitely is feasible and everyone is different. I personally went for an epidural but I know plenty of mamas who had an unmedicated birth or even a home birth and were absolutely fine. Just to add I wasn’t pressured to take or not to take medications by anyone at any point in Queens. Everything was completely my choice at all times. Regarding breastfeeding I was supported because I expressed I wanted to breastfeed and not give formula. Midwives read my birth plan and checked with me what I wanted to do. Please note that no hospital is expected to provide formula if it’s something you want to do you’ll have to bring your own. I know not everyone has had the same experience there, but just wanted to express that I know plenty of mums who have had an unmedicated birth even when induced. Do your own research and make sure your birthing partner knows and can communicate your wishes X

Disregard a message that says don't be resolutely stuck in one mindset. Fantastic. I don't really like that the way I was meant to feel is being invalidated. Just research research research

@Jo it’s coming across as if you’re saying unmedicated birth is not feasible. It can feel like scaremongering for someone that might want an unmedicated birth. X

I gave birth there 3 years ago no issues whatsoever the staff on duty was amazing, I had midwife named Brooke and Paula who delivered my son
