Feeling defeated

Baby born 5lbs 11oz. Today, at 6 months (February 26th), he is weighing at 12.6 lbs But grown in height. We are being referred to a feeding specialist. I've worked with LCs, and he's combo fed but mainly breastfed when im woth him on the weekends and nights. I trust my pediatrician because she has kids the same age as my own kids. All of my kids have been 5lb babies, but for some reason, my boy just hasn't gained as well as his sisters did at this age. Contemplating on exclusively pumping and bottle feeding him to see if that makes a difference. There are just so many emotions, and then I've contemplated on just completely switching to formula but I feel guilty and determined now since I made 6months to make it to a 1 year since I made it 14months with my girls.

Had he been on a consistent curve the entire time? Because if so I think it's ok.. my girl has been 20-25 percentile since birth... born 7lb 9oz and 15lb 8oz at 7 months... if you need someone to talk to, im here

@Moira we started off great but he slowly declined and has fallen off his curve.

I feel for you! I would say that it wouldn’t hurt going to the LC and doing a weighted feed since you can see what he is getting/make you feel better too. I would ask about comparing his weight to a breastfed weight chart too. He has doubled his weight which is what I have been told is fine for 6M. Not all babies can be in the 90th percentile….you have to have a range otherwise there wouldn’t be a chart if they all were the same. I hope this helps! The same thing happened to me and I sent to formula after 3M since it didn’t feel like my pediatrician was listening and LC said she was getting enough 🤷🏻‍♀️

@Lounette gotcha, I know it's difficult but do what you need to for baby. When I was pregnant I had all intentions of EBF (pumping upon returning to work)... at 1 month she had dropped and our pediatrician said to supplement at times... then with added stress and stuff with work, my supply dropped and now we're mostly formula fed... I pump once at work and get a total of 3oz, but that's it... if I try to breast feed at home, she's hungry soon after... I know it's rough, and it's hard to accept, but ultimately baby comes first

Has he been checked for tongue tie as this can make feeding difficult

@Kath yes he has.

My boy was born 4lb 14.7oz and at 6 months he was 12.02lb. Our pediatrician was not concerned. We were told to begin introducing food to supplement milk. We have been offering foods 3x per day now. I exclusively breastfeed with the exception of a bottle before bed. He sleeps through the night so I started waking up at 2am to pump and I give him that milk before bed the next day. I don’t have any advice for you just thought to share my baby’s similar growth!

Since he’s 6 months would you be able to introduce foods to help with weight gain while still getting his main nutrition from Breast milk? That’s what we did to help weight gain once mine hit 5.5 months. we did earths best organic multi grain cereal along with introducing other foods!

@Jessica thank you. I'm used to small babies my girls were both 5lbs too but they maintained their curve the whole time. My plan is to start doing food tasting with him now that he's 6months. My pediatrician said to throw in some butter in with whatever we do lol

@Savannah, we are starting to introduce veggies now. Then I'll start throwing in fruits, too.

Thank you everyone! I scheduled with an LC to see how much he is transferring to see if that's an issue

I second adding fats-butter, avacado, full fat yogurts, coconut milk to solids for babe. But also add some more to you to beef up your breast milk.

My 6 month old is formula fed and only 13lbs, pediatrician isn’t concerned because she is growing in height, we are starting to introduce oatmeal so I’m hoping it helps her gain some weight
