@Stephanie im also thinking about ymca,
I have been taking my son 2x a week since he was 9 months. It was hard the first week or so but now he loves it. And I love how well he sleeps lol
We also got infant swim lessons at a private club, not through them but the instructor was using their pool. It was ISR (infant swim rescue) and it’s expensive but you can usually ask if they will allow you to apply for some kind of leniency on the cost if household income meets the requirement. I believe that’s up to the instructor, it’s not require of them to do it. Go to their website and punch in your zip code to see if there’s an instructor within driving distance if it seems like what you’re looking for. We have an unfenced pool in the backyard where we rent, we had to get lessons for our 6 month old. And yes, she has fallen in with us right there twice in two years and both times she was safe 🙌
@Nicki that’s great. I am fixing to get ISR lessons for my baby he is 16 months now but I think it’s so important living in south Florida with so many pools around. Could you share with me a little bit more about the experience of the class itself? I’ve seen some heartbreaking videos online and I go back and forth but I do think it’s super important and yes I already have the isr certified instructor from the website. Thank you so much!
I did aquarobix with my son until he was 1 - it was really fun and you kind of use the baby as a weight. But after that I tried baby lessons and he loved it but I found the changing rooms too stressful as he wouldn’t sit still and with the floors being wet tiles I just worried he was going to hurt himself so we’re going to try again when I feel he will stand still for long enough!might add the cubical had curtains and it was unisex changing rooms too which made it even worse as he kept trying to open the curtain when I was half dressed! 😂 I do think it’s really good for water confidence though!
Yes there great. My son has been in swimming lessons sinve he was 8 weeks old. He just turned 3 and is basically swimming independently short distances
@Cristina yeah I can message you some videos of my kids in lessons if interested, my son started at 16mos and my daughter at 6. The 16mo was able to learn the “swim float swim” technique but the 6mo just learned the “float” technique. It’s been possible to take my son who is now 5 and have him practice over the years every summer and teach him to swim, but it’s been harder with my daughter to expand her skills by myself. This summer we’ll get there.
@Nicki thank you so much that would be amazing so I can get an idea
The YMCA we went to was more like bath time as all they did was put toys in the water. I found a private tennis club, with a swim team, that had an amazing swim lesson program. My daughter learned how to swim (went ubder water the first lesson) and water safety. I highly recommend getting them in the water early and with a program that teaches water safety!
