Tirion Birth Centre Vs Health MLU

Hello! Has anyone had or is anyone from/living in Cardiff planning on birthing in Tirion? My first was in a freestanding midwife unit near Bristol and had a great experience, the clinicalness of hospital really makes me anxious, both during the labour and after you've given birth. Does anyone have any positive birthing experiences either in Tirion or the MLU at the Heath? Would love to hear all about it. Thanks !!

Can't rate the staff in mlu high enough! Had my little one on 21st via waterbirth, first time mum and they showed me my room, read my notes and birth preferences straight away. Which put me at ease as I was very nervous never having been through it before. They asked me how hands on I'd like them to be during everything and someone was with me in the room constantly after I replied that I'd like them to be there. I was mostly looked after by 1 midwife and a fab, clearly knowledgeable student until I was fully dilated and then another midwife joined us too. Afterwards we were transferred to another room on mlu up the corridor where we could rest in a double bed by ourselves, my husband staying the night with me until the next day and they were confident I could breastfeed successfully and little one passed her checks. There was no rush to discharge us and it was all at our own pace. Hope that helps x

I gave birth at the Heath on Thursday and then Sunday was at Tirion for breastfeeding support. I honestly had a great experience at both. I will say however the MLU at the Heath is definitely a lot busier and although I never felt like I wasn’t supported the Heath is definitely more rushed. I had to wait over an hour to be examined due to low staff and midwives had to be pulled from a different area to care for me due to lack of staff - I did give birth at 4am however after going in at 2. Tirion is MUCH quieter, I was the only patient there on Sunday and stayed overnight. All 5 midwives I dealt with were super supportive, listened to my concerns and allowed me to lead what support I needed. My hormones were raging by then so they’ve dealt with a good number of cries from me and were amazing. I was on the verge of giving up BF but they were so patient and encouraging. If I was to give birth again although I had great experiences at both I would go to Tirion.

The only issue with Tirion from the room I stayed in was that the toilet and shower are shared with 1 other room but given that it’s so quiet there it wasn’t really an issue. They are also great for making teas and coffees super frequently 😂 I also found they checked in a lot and I learned a lot of general tips with looking after my LO Happy for you to reach out if you have any questions and good luck x

My experience was amazing, so much support didn't feel like a hospital. I was completely separated from everyone else. I didn't see another sole whilst i was there. Made me less stressed and made my experience so much better that I thought it would be
