Sleep

Hi everyone. I've got a nearly 4 week old baby, who is waking every hour through the night. Is this normal, is there anything I can do to make him go a little longer? Any advice is most welcome!

I have a 5 year old and 2 year old so struggling to remember the specifics - I think you're brain wipes it from your memory 😅 but one recommendation is to try get them lots of daylight in the day to help their circadium rhythm / day-night cycles. Sleep deprivation is hard, hang in there

My son was very much like this we found that although it’s frowned upon co/sleeping helped a lot, my midwife said because they are so use to being warm and cosy tucked up inside you listening to your heart beat they crave that comfort still Maybe he just needs bit more milk before going down they usually do 2-3 hour naps through the night Once they get out of this stage it gets so much easier just hang in there x

@Francesca I've been thinking about co sleeping as the only time we get him to sleep longer than an hour is on me or his dad. He is so little though I'd be worried I'd squish him🤣 yeah the sleep deprivation is hitting now, on Wednesday he was up and wouldn't settle from 1am-6am

Is he waking for feeds? When my little girl was 4 weeks old (now 10 months) she was waking every hour for a feed. It's just a growth and development thing. Baby is still adjusting to not being in your belly and nice and toasty so his bed feels cold and empty. You can always try a blanket over the fitted sheet to make it warmer for him (I did this and she slept so much better afterwards). It can take babies about 7 months before they start to recognise that they aren't a piece of you anymore

Also a fan of co sleeping. I think people are talking more positively about it in recent years and its accepted in other countries. But follow your instincts with whats right for you

Are you breastfeeding? I tried exclusively for the first 4 weeks and It nearly broke me... I started giving her baby milk in a bottle at night only and that got us a full nights sleep ?

@Ebony yeah he is feeding at every wake!

@Jess yes exclusively breast feeding and finding it tricky. I feel like I'm making enough milk for him as my boobs are always full. It's a lot being the only one who can feed him though, especially when he is feeding every hour!

@Ellie I'll never forget sitting on the edge of the bed sobbing because my nipples were sore and bleeding and she was waking every hour and her dad suggested the baby formula just give me a break so he could help xxxx With her she just took to it and started sleeping 8 to 9 hours straight and I breast fed during the day x

@Jess did you find this hindered your supply?

Totally normal, they have a growth spurt around them and therefore feed more. I am also a fan of co-sleeping when my girls wake up lots.

@Ellie I think I had a problem with my supply from the go unfortunately 😕 I tried pumping all the time but never succeeded large amounts .... it was always enough for her... but couldn't build up a back up amount.
