Silent reflux help!

I feel like the issues are never ending, you feel like you fix one problem but then have to face another! My little boy is finally on SMA alfamino for suspected CMPA after trying other CMPA formula, normal formula, anti reflux formula, omeprazole, gaviscon, carobel.. you name it.. we’ve tried it. I have seen an improvement on this milk but it seems like he’s still squirming and in pain after feeds, still hiccups lots and coughs during/after feeds although the sick/spit up has stopped since adding scoop of carobel. The evening is horrific he will just scream and cry non stop until he’s exhausted himself and goes to sleep and seems like there’s no way we can help him as nothing we do stops the crying. I feel like I’m back at square one again. He’s been on omeprazole highest dose for 6 weeks and it seemed to help for few weeks and now doesn’t even with revised highest dose, if anything I feel like it aggravates his stomach more. Can anyone help or give advice as I am literally all of out options and really exhausted now 😔

How are the poos?

@Rasa dark green/browny and runnier.. but checked and that’s completely normal for being on this CMPA formula!

Fair enough, just stay strong. It will pass, I opted to wean early that helped talk to you gp and hv regarding that

We’re the exact same! To the point we thought there must be something wrong in her tummy so she had scans and everything was fine.. They have said she probably has an immature gut and doesn’t have the right balance of bacteria in her tummy that she needs to digest. When we saw the gastro paediatrician she said get her off omeprazole and carobel and go back to a normal formula (off CMPA) and prescribed us some probiotics for her digestion. We tried weaning her off omeprazole but her reflux got worse so back on the highest dose of that and we haven’t tried weaning off carobel yet, we’re currently 5 weeks in to aptamil advanced formula and was 5 weeks into probiotics but her poo was just so so runny constantly so they told us to stop probiotics which we did last week and now she’s struggling to poo and crying in pain with that! It feels never ending very very difficult i feel your pain xx

I would highly recommend seeing a cranial osteopath! My boys CMPA and reflux was actually body tension and immature gut as someone else said above. Probiotics and a couple of cranial sessions and he was like a different baby. We also trialed CMPA formulas, gaviscon etc but took him off all of it and back on normal formula since he was 10 weeks old he’s now 8m and still thriving :) I can see you’re kind of local to me, we went to J’Nel in MK - https://www.breastfeedinghelp.co.uk/craniosacral-services

Have you considered a cranial osteopath to see him?

@Jenny I’ve been wanting scans but drs keeps saying no as they don’t believe it would show anything but if I hear ‘it’s normal, persevere’ one more time from drs I am going to explode as it’s not normal 😩 but bless you, you sound like your really going through it too. It’s really bloody hard being in the thick of it all when nothing seems to work 😩 I’m sorry you’re going through it too and really hope your little one gets better soon! X

Thank you so much! I will try anything at this point as it seems everything so far hasn’t worked and I’m literally all out of options 😩 makes you feel so helpless and a failure as a parent when you can’t help your child who’s in pain constantly 😩. What symptoms did your baby have originally that made the drs think CMPA etc? X

@Dianne I haven’t, but the person above you said the same and I’ve not even thought about that tbh! I’ve booked a session now though to give it a shot! Thanks! X

@Jenny I’m a paediatric nurse and sometimes I think we medicalise and medicate patients and don’t advise holistic methods of treatment because we aren’t well informed about them but I’ve heard good things. I hope it works out for your little one

@Jenny oh yeah ‘it’s normal’ it isn’t normal when they are screaming in pain surely not! when we did go for scans the guy doing the scan basically looked at us as if we were mental. I’m sorry for you too it’s so hard, if you aren’t happy keep pushing them for scans. Have you seen a gastroenterologist? xxx

@Incognito sounds very similar to my babies symptoms! Same with the tongue tie also! But yeah I never want another child after this as it’s really damaged my mental health and I’d not wanna go through it again! Thank you though I’l check that page out! Xx

@Jenny it’s truly awful and cruel on them! But I keep asking to be referred but they keep saying it’s not needed, it’s so frustrating! They really don’t care at all 😩 xxx
