Gestational diabetes

I have been diagnosed with gestational diabetes and my readings after food are becoming higher than the recommended limit. How long were people diet controlled until they started medication? I have been asked today to check daily blood sugars instead of every other day and i’m feeling a little anxious about it all. Thank you 🤰🏻

I did daily for about 2/3 days then got called in to go on medication. It’s very overwhelming to start with (I have it quite severely - I’m on metformin, 3 x rapid acting insulin injections and 1 x slow acting a day). But you get used to it and you learn what you can and can’t eat pretty quickly. If you go on medication you will probably still have to test 4 x a day. Once I was put on insulin it actually made life a bit easier as I manage my own dosage.

@Naomi thank you. Yes its al over whelming and I am a little worried for little one. Yesterday I was in range all day, but this morning it was up to 8.3mmols post lunch. And continues to be like that after meals. I’m sure I will hear from them again by the end of the week.

I somehow passed my test but I test at home and it’s almost always over the limit, sometimes way over. It’s so frustrating. I was told if it’s 50% over the recommended threshold you go on medication. Sugars have been my biggest migraine for weeks, pairing carbs is the woooorst just let me have a biscuit 😭

I’ve found eating red meat (I’m not a big meat eater normally) with meals really help. Seeds like hemp, cia etc with breakfast. And nuts if I have a handful of nuts with lunch that tends to help. They are concerned specifically about your fasting reading. If your fasting reading is pretty low then you can probably get away with just tablets (my fasting reading didn’t go down post dinner the day before 🙈 so I was put straight on insulin).

@Naomi thank you for your advice ☺️ my fasting levels are 5.3 and under, so we shall see what they say.

I’ve been diagnosed also! And it’s become the bane of my life!! I have to test 4 times a day, not on any medication (yet) I struggle with mornings (miss my bowl of cereal) have had to really look at my diet and try and get some more steps in. Breakfast is now a one wholemeal seeded toast with organic peanut butter and two strawberry’s. Lunch is a salad with chicken or halloumi with some humous. And dinner is also protein, with brown rice, or brown pasta or baby potatoes (3 of them) I miss cake :( Hang in there, it’s horrible seeing the result when it’s red, I always end up feeling guilty. Hoping you find a balance that works for you!

I was diagnosed 3 weeks ago and on metformin twice daily and insulin overnight.. went on medication within a couple of days and insulin within a week. My meal bloods seem to be behaving but struggling with my fasting one. I have to test 5 x daily. Bread is the only big no no for me i’ve found, Its all trial and error at this stage but you get used to it 😊

I was told to call the diabetes midwives team as soon as I got 3 readings above the range. It happened 4 days after I started tracking and they put me on medicine straight away. For me personally the post meal glucose level are quite easy to manage, although it’s a big sacrifice not to eat what I usually would. The fasting levels are a big hit and miss though- if I’m stressed in the morning it will automatically go up.

I started testing last week and my fasting levels are only 0.1-0.2 over most days and my meal readings are all under the limit. How high and how many readings was everyone’s reading before they got put on medication/ insulin?

I had a call from my diabetic midwife this afternoon, she said if I made tweaks to my diet then I shouldn’t need to go on medication 🤞🏻🤞🏻 so we shall see
