Toilet training

My son is struggling with the association between the toilet and doing his wee/poo. I sit him on there for 20+ minutes and then I have to take him off to do something like to cook etc. and that’s when he wee’s. Really struggling as I don’t know how to help him, if anyone has any advice I’d be grateful thanks x

You let him sit on the toilet for 20mins or you try him on the toilet every 20mins? 20mins on the toilet is a long time. How long have you been toilet training? If it's the start it's best to let them get wet and recognise the feeling

@Kath sit on there for 20 minutes. I thought that too but my other half said to sit him there until he goes. Is it better to take him in every 20 minutes instead? Just the start! He’s not been interested and adamant he wants nappies still. I didn’t want to force him into it but I feel like he’s getting quite old now.

Try the book "oh crap potty training" it tells you how to do it and lots of problems you might encounter. I wouldn't sit him there for more than 5 minutes and only when you've seen a sign he looks like he needs to go, but the book takes you through all of this.

Yeh I'd take home every 20-30mins for a few minutes, you don't want to cause a bad association with the toilet. If it's just the start we started naked and tried the toilet every 30mins, if there was an accident in between it's OK as it's the start of recognising the feeling weeing with feeling of getting wet, and just explain wee goes in the toilet.
