Introducing normal formula

My LO was diagnosed with CMPA at 6 weeks old had pretty much all the symptom’s that come along with it we was prescribed Nutramigen and within the first day we saw massive improvements with almost all of the symptoms disappearing within the first two weeks we just have not managed to get his eczema under control yet! My baby is now 18 weeks old and we was never told to reintroduce normal formula after 2 week trial period and gp was happy to keep him on Nutramigen, however we had recent trip to the gp regarding my sons eczema( we saw a a completely different doctor ) and he was asking us questions and asked why we never tried to trail him back on normal formula and that we should do that to see if he actually has CMPA !(was quite rude and abrupt with me to be honest ) i obviously explained what the previous gp told us and he just wasn’t too fazed to be honest telling us we should do this for the next two weeks My LO has now been on Aptimil since Friday and oh my he is grumpy excessive gas and pooping during every bottle is in clear discomfort and pain , multiple wakings in the night in clear discomfort,I had a gp appointment yesterday and explained this and he’s basically told me I need to give it two weeks ! Has anyone experienced this and what did they do ? I hate seeing him so much pain so I thinking about just buying the Nutramigen myself or should I just wait after the two weeks I really don’t know what to do

This goes against what our dietician advised us. My LO was on Nutramigen and then needed to go onto puramino as was still having symptoms. We were told not to reintroduce cows milk until at least 12 months and that would be done with a milk ladder. I would get another opinion as it sounds as if this GP doesn’t understand CMPA. Pharmacists are quite helpful with CMPA in my experience and they can contact your GP too. X

@Lauren I thought this as the HV and previous doctor has told me it would be reintroduced using the milk ladder so I was super confused as he had been on Nutramigen for so long now it just didn’t make sense I am going to ring the doctors again today and ask for a different gp never in my life have I experienced feeling so intimidated and that I was doing something so wrong x

My son has CMPA and one of his biggest symptoms was eczema. He got worse on nutramigen as it's still has hydrolysed milk in it I believe and had to go one neocate which is completely dairy free. Within a few days his eczema began to improve. I would get a second opinion, we ended up being referred to the dietician, allergists and dermatologist. We needed steroid creams and lots of emmolient creams to keep his skin hydrated and more comfortable. Xx

@Charly I honestly didn’t think he’s is eczema could still be bad on Nutramigen thank you so much ! I will definitely be asking for a second opinion, I just feel like the past couple of days the gp made me feel like I am was just one of those anxious first time mums ! X

Don't feel like that honestly no one will ever know your baby as well as you do. Follow you instincts. I remembered crying to my health visitor when he was 6 weeks old and getting told he was just a sicky baby and then the GP instantly agreeing he wasn't just a sicky baby when he was 8 weeks old. We were lucky to find a super supportive GP who I will still request to see now when possible for both kids and myself. The amount of people whose babies have CMPA and they have to battle with their GP is way to high feel free to DM me if you need to talk anymore. Xx.

It is normal to do a trial back on regular formula, this is the only way to confirm the allergy unfortunately. Some babies like mine and it sounds like @Lauren too don’t have to trial it because they didn’t get better on any of the ‘first line’ milks (nutramigen, pepti 1, sma althera) and have to go onto the ‘second line’ (puramino, sma alfamino, neocate). These second line milks are amino acid based (so have no cows milk protein in at all) so if symptoms then do improve the allergy is confirmed. The first line milks still contain cows milk proteins but they are more extensively hydrolysed which makes it easier for baby to digest (most babies are fine with this, it’s quite rare for them to need second line) Eczema can be due to the allergy but eczema is also common for babies so is not always due to the allergy and may need some steroid cream to resolve. It sounds like your baby’s allergy has been confirmed by the symptoms he is experiencing so I would go back to the GP and (cont..)

That they give you another prescription for the nutramigen. They usually say 2 weeks because for some babies it can take that long for it to build up and then show symptoms again but your baby is clearly already showing them.
