Told my LO

Had CMPA last Wednesday because her stools were mucusy and had blood in them and had been unsettled since birth. Since being on aptimal pepti 1 she’s now’s sick after every feed and after 2 ozs starts gagging so is wanting a bottle every 2 hours. I went to the GP who sent me back to the hospital for monitoring as she threw up a lot there. She had a blood test to check nothing else was wrong and the doctor last night wanted her weight to be checked this morning as she had lost weight too. However I’ve just had another doctor come in who now is telling me she doesn’t think it’s CMPA and that some babies are just a bit ‘harder’ she put it. I wouldn’t say she’s harder I would say she seems like she’s in pain. I just don’t know what to do now basically being told she has to just get on with it 🤦🏽‍♀️ I questioned why the other doctors said it was CMPA and she just said no one knows for definite as there’s no test so everyone just guesses 😣 it’s honestly driving me insane not being able to help her mixed with the barely any sleep in 7 weeks.

I'm so sorry you're experiencing this. I've had a similar time - my girl has had horrendous reflux since 5 weeks and has been completely constipated and in agony since 7 weeks. We have been repeatedly fobbed off by HV and GP, tried pepti and it made her worse similar to your story. HV keeps saying it's just colic but I know it's not and she's in pain and noone cares. Feel free to message to chat I really feel your pain ❤️

Are you using any thickeners? The milk is really thin so can cause a lot of issues with being sick. She also could still have cmpa. There are first line milks (like pepti, nutramigen and sma althera) which still contain milk proteins but they are more hydrolysed. If these milks don’t resolve symptoms then baby may need an amino acid based milk (neocate, puranimo or sma alfamino) which don’t contain any milk proteins at all. There isn’t a test for it unfortunately but it can also take 6-8 weeks for symptoms to improve fully. A thickener like carobel would probably be a good start and then if symptoms still aren’t better I would push for a change of milk.

@Teri what other symptoms does baby have? It could be infant dyschezia which unfortunately does have to resolve itself or it could be that pepti just isn’t the right milk for your baby

Honestly I feel like I was getting somewhere then one person this morning decides na it’s not that it’s just a baby. I’m sorry I’ve never heard of a baby having blood in their stools and as soon as the doctor see her poo last week he said straight away that’s an allergy. My eldest had reflux and had carobel and honestly it was the best thing ever for her. I was tempted to try it as I have a box still in date but thought best to go GP route. Even with reflux she was never this unsettled. She sounds like she’s always in pain. I’m just worried about going back to cow and gate and it making her worse then having to change her again as I know it’s not good to keep changing formulas. I just don’t want her to be constantly in pain 🤦🏽‍♀️

Don’t go back to the regular formula, definitely try the carobel. How long has she been on pepti?

She’s been on the pepti since last Wednesday and the diarrhoea had stopped but she’s now vomiting and wont take more than 2oz at a time. They’ve just brought me a bottle of cow and gate and she’s projectile vomited it everywhere 🤦🏽‍♀️

We've tried carobel, gaviscon, omeprazole, different formulas etc. She used to poo fine til we switched to cow and gate and it's never been right since despite changing again. For us Hipp (partially hydrolysed) alongside laxido has got us in a really good place. I hate to say it's trial and error cos it's such a cop out but I don't believe babies need to be in pain. the doctor explained that CMPA is a spectrum from completely allergic usually resulting in failure to thrive and they need to be on pepti and such things, but ours probably has a mild intolerance at worst so the pepti wasn't really necessary. Going back to the regular formula was so much better for me and a friend ( @Cerys ) it's so individual x

Yeh my main fear is I did it with my eldest changed formulas not realising that could mess them up she ended up with reflux after doing that. The vomiting has only started since being on pepti so I guessed she would need a thickener as the pepti did stop the diarrhoea but I get what works for one baby might not for another. Just feels a bit like we’re going backwards and worried she will end up really poorly 🤦🏽‍♀️
