I don't think you get a choice, but i could be wrong. I had to be consultant led unit due to having GD

Yeah as Chloe said it's more a high risk V low risk thing. If you have a cesarean or need any special monitoring you'll be under the consultant team, anyone else is midwifery led... Very different environments

The midwife asked me on monday what I am gonna choose as I mentioned the epidural anaesthesia.

@Kallirroi if you do that then you'll be under the consultants and be on delivery suite to give birth

@Jenny did you give birth in the midwifery unit? It's my 1st pregnancy and I am a bit confused and stressed because I don't how it works.

I was given the choice as I'm low risk (basically if you want a c section, epidural, 42 weeks+ or are high risk you would be consultant led) Midwife unit is much more chill and if at any point you want to divert to consultant led you can I've been on the midwife unit for a tour and a couple of sweeps and it would be my choice I started being induced today on the induction ward which I assume is more like the consultant led ward and while it was fine there is much less privacy and peace than on midwife led

As long as you’re low risk, I would definitely recommend the MLU as it looked really lovely!

I was midwifery led the whole way through my pregnancy. I wanted a pool birth on MLU. MLU was actually closed the night I went in due to short staff. I had a long latent phase of labour and didn’t sleep for 4 nights prior to giving birth. It was advised that I had the epidural, and of course I made the informed choice to have it. As stated above, having the epidural means you’ll be consultant led on the delivery suite. Every member on the delivery suite was absolutely amazing. My whole experience (after the initial long phase) was so surreal and amazing 🥹 My experience overall was better with delivery suite/consultant led than MLU (I’d rang numerous times over the 4 days prior and had been in to MLU too)

@Lucy do they check the baby as well ? midwife or a doctor as well ?

@Becci were you able to have your birth partner with you? Did you have the option to stay for some hours or days after labour or they didn't give you this option? I don't know how difficult is to leave the hospital with a newborn straight away.

@Sophie thanks for your response! I wish you all the best for you and your baby !

@Kallirroi Yes, had my birth partner with me. The only time he had to leave was on the second night/night I gave birth - on the women’s ward (not sure exactly what it’s called). He came back at 9am (think partners can stay 9am-9pm on that ward). We then stayed a further 3 nights on what’s called the transitional ward after that. That was as baby needed a little TLC. I don’t think partners usually stay but it was discretionary and my partner was able to stay but on a reclining chair - I had a side room with an en suite. I think the amount of time you stay is dependent on how you and baby are 🙂

@Becci thanks a lot 🙂

Things might have changed now but when I had my LO in Covid I was in MLU and then half way through I decided to try the epidural and I stayed in MLU. When you’re in labour you tend to stay put, unless it’s an emergency. Good luck 🤞

@Kallirroi yes I was mlu. The midwives are amazing there, so helpful and kind. It's very relaxed and peaceful there too. Give them a follow on Facebook /insta, cavmidwives they post loads definitely put my mind at ease. No mums/dads know how it works at first, I didn't know even in labour when they were asking if I wanted any pain relief 😂 it's important to try not let it stress you and just go with the flow, remember to breathe, have birth preferences rather than a plan as sometimes unforeseen things happen... One step at a time, you got this momma! 😉 X

@Jenny thanks a lot 🙂

Hey I gave birth last month - started in midwifery and ended up on consultant feel free to DM me x

@Nicole this has changed you can’t have an epidural in the MLU - I moved through 3 different rooms during labour!

@Rebecca 😮 I would be so over that nonsense! Sorry you had to have that extra stress during labour x

Consultation lead if there is any problems with mum or baby , I was consultation leas for the first 6-7 months as baby wasn’t growing as much as they would have liked , but when he caught up and was a good size I was switched to midwife care for the remainder of my pregnancy then when baby was born I put back onto consultation lead as my blood pressure went wack and his heart rate went funny as well. He a happy normal ( for him) 2 year old now

Update.. So induction didn't go very well for me so I ended up being moved from midwifery unit to consultant led and honestly the team are fantastic, I didn't mourn the MLU one bit! So don't worry if things change up!
