Collecting colostrum

I have collected 27ml in total of colostrum over the last couple of weeks as have a c section booked for Monday morning and worried incase my milk doesn’t come in for days again like last time. Will this be enough as I really want to try and breastfeed this time?

Yes!! I collected and then left it all at home (he ended up being an emergency c-section after a check up) and I still had enough just from collecting in the hospital. If your body is already producing then that should definitely be more than enough! Great job mama!!

@Emily aah no sorry to hear your labour didn’t go to plan, I need to make sure I don’t forget these! Am I best just taking a few u think or all of them? Someone told me to only take a few at a time and send hubby home to top up but rather not do that as it’s far away x

Wow that is impressive

Are you pumping it or hang expressing it? I’m going to bring a little with me to the hospital I want baby to latch more

All baby really needs is colostrum in the first few days, if you're already producing enough to collect I wouldn't be worried about your supply. I never collected pre delivery, my milk didn't come in for about 5 days but little guy was fine on just the small amounts of colostrum I was making. Their stomachs only hold about 5-7mls at a time for the first few days.

It's best to freeze them after 3 days No later than 4 days In the refrigerator if not freezer you can use it for bath time or make butt paste with it

How did you collect it , I didn’t even have any milk after a week

Collecting colostrum will not speed up the milk process fyi, it can still take a few days after birth

This is amazing!! Take them all in. The staff will keep them frozen for you! And take home whatever you don't use

I was told not to take much to the hospital as they wouldn’t be able to store any for longer than 24hrs but when we arrived they asked if i wanted it putting in the fridge or freezer- i would call your hospital and ask if they are able to store it and how, as they all seem to be different!

Youve got loads well done xx

That’s amazing well done 🙏

@Eboni I did the first lot by hand and this last week iv been using the pump and managed to fill 3 syringes in one go (about 10 mins, 5 on each breast) xx

@Bella I used my hands, went the breastfeeding workshop in the hospital for a couple of weeks and they showed me there and did it with me then this last week I used my pump x

@Jodie I know, my last baby 11 years ago my milk didn’t come in for days and I didn’t collect any colostrum and gave up and ended up missing out on breastfeeding so don’t want that to happen this time

I froze all my syringes but ended up having an emergency c-section unexpectedly and all syringes were at home but managed to get through with just hand expressing in hospital for the first night (he was born at 5pm) whilst he was in scbu. My partner brought all my syringes in the next day in a cool bag with ice packs but they all had to be refrigerated and used within 24 hours but luckily not much at all went to waste and it was a god send having them because little one struggled to latch properly at first so was handy to use the syringes and then hand express more in hospital to give him when he was in the crib next to me. We ended up being in for a couple days though so if you're planned and all being well you should only be in for the 1 night and home again the next day. If you're able to get this much now you'll definitley be able to hand express enough in hospital if you need to! Good luck😊

That’s bloody good. I got nothing at that point
