Collecting colostrum

I’m 36 weeks today and want to start collecting colostrum soon. I’m just wondering what I collect it in and if I would get these from my midwife. I’ve seen you can get syringes to save it in and I’m fine with buying these but want to hold off if the nhs provides these. My midwife hasn’t mentioned collecting colostrum yet but I have an appointment with her at UHW on Tuesday so I’m thinking she will then.

Are you local to Barry? I have a massive bag of 1ml syringes with caps, I started collecting at 37 weeks (as it was my 3rd baby) xx

Mine didn't mention it at all, it was in fact the other way around. I don't think they're under any obligation to chat to you about it or give syringes out but some do. I just bought sterile 1ml syringes online n started when I was ready. Be warned its hard at first, stick with it though! The more you try the better it gets especially once you've got the technique 🤞

Hi my midwife said unless medically advised (eg gestational diabetes) they don’t actively recommend collecting colostrum and they won’t store it in the hospital for you and you need to buy your own syringes. She showed me how to do it but only because I asked x
