Breastfeeding

Do I need to use one or both breasts for feeding? New to this 😅

Whatever works for you. Some offer both. Some do one at a time. It will also depend on your supply. For instance, I offer one at a time and alternate with each feed as I have a very good supply and my baby doesn’t fully drain either of breasts when they feed.

Offer both breasts during a feed, baby may only want one but at the next feed start from the other side. Have you had your baby yet? I would recommend reading up on breastfeeding and what to expect or go along to a local support group x

@Jessica I have had my baby and did no research beforehand and the midwives didn’t seem to help me out much with it either and I just got a booklet

I do one. Then the next feed I do the other one. They say one is dinner then offer the other one for dessert. But what worked for me was just one at each feeding.

I would definitely recommended seeing if there’s a support group near you in that case, they can help you with any questions and make sure your latch is correct etc

I’ve only ever fed from one breast per feed and alternated every feed. Every baby is different though x

I only have milk in one brest.

You should offer both breasts for every feeding. It’s okay if they don’t empty it.

Depends on your supply and your baby - we do one breast a feed (unless he’s cluster feeding 😆)

Offer both sides each feed

I alternated each feed and just fed from one x

I usually only offer the other one if she starts getting fussy with the boob I started out with or the other side is a little engorged. As long as baby is getting full and you’re producing enough then one sided eating is fine.

I was using both to begin with and swapping her over mid way through a feed but she wasn’t gaining weight so my midwife asked how I was feeding her and I told her I was swapping half way and she said that I should alternate boobs each feed so that she’s completely emptying one side and getting the fattier milk at the back of the breast

The haaka is a great suction to use while you’re occupying one boob then you can switch. It can help you make a milk stash

@Nami I’ve been hearing about them, I didn’t think that they would catch enough to build up a stash

Ideally alternate per feed but I fed for 15 months in total on one side because my LG didn’t like one side and we got on just fine. Whatever works best for you both 🫶🏻

I only ever offered one side but I got off to a rooky start because when the midwife’s were helping me in hospital they kept offering the same boob even when I said about switching to the other side so then I had to make up for that after and keep offering the one she hadn’t had. Worked out perfectly fine for us tho in the end x

My second baby was my breastfed baby, but I had an oversupply with my first (exclusively pumped). That first experience set me up so well for my second that I offered one breast per feed and was able to maintain my supply. Many people, though, have to offer both.

I do one and then the next feed I do the other one and keep swapping. Works best for me😊

Some babies take from both, some babies only take from one. Just make sure you're alternating if baby only takes from one. If they are very young they might end up with a preference for one boob, which can sometimes cause supply issues.

I only did one side per feed. When i was offering both, I was overproducing milk and had recurrent mastitis. If you’re an oversupplier, one side will be just fine. PS. I’m almost a year pp and still going.

I’ve always just fed from one boob per feed and then switched at next feed. As she’s gotten bigger I offer both now.

They definitely did for me. I would do at least 3 oz from both. Especially in the beginning.
