Transition toddler to his own bed

My kid is about to turn 2 in July. He has never consistently slept in his crib and after a while i just gave in to letting him sleep in my bed. I am wanting to transition him to his own bed in his room but am worried it might be difficult since he will be able to get out of bed. His room is baby proofed. Does anyone have experience with this? Any tips on helping them adjust? I still have his crib but, i kind of think he might feel more excited getting his own bed.
