Autism

Anyones toddler suspected of having autism or any developmental delays ? My sons overall development is behind in areas such as play speech independence social skills etc he’s got the support for his learning at nursery however there is a big family history of autism and the communication amongst my health visitor is so poor and I know how hard it can be to even start the process of any referrals. I just want him to have an assessment before he starts big school. I know it’s a long way off but I don’t want him to struggle in the long run and maybe it’ll benefit him having the support in place now rather than further down the line?

Has he had his hearing checked? Is he on the waiting list for speech therapy? That said they don’t tend to worry about it until age 3 and then the waiting list is huge. Would nursery write a supporting letter if you went to the gp? Is there anyone they can contact from early years to visit your son in his current setting? He can get an EHCP without a diagnosis if he needs one for school.

@Karen hearing test no but speech therapy have accepted his referral and put him on the waiting list but we haven’t got an appointment yet. Yeah an early years specialist already came the end of last year and put some targets in place such as nursery to use makaton and to do more activities leading him by the hand with one worded instructions or writing down what an object is as well as showing him. I’m not sure if they will write a supporting letter. Nursery says he’s got skills of a 6-12 month old in most areas and another was 0-6 months. He enjoys watching YouTube nursery rhymes that’s how he learnt to babble the tunes of songs and he can babble song tunes more than he can actually talk.

I would push with the Health visitor. If she doesn't respond much, call and ask for another one.

@𝔾𝕚𝕤𝕖𝕝𝕝𝕖 she’s finally coming on the 9th April after having chasing her. It’s a new health visitor so we haven’t met her yet
